I love the feature of City-states. Some one-city civs that can help you a lot or give you a headache. Also it can bring diplomacy on higher level. :nyam:

That game was amazing. Civ 4 at least had some degree of variable gov't stuff, but it was still far too idealist and borderline silly. (Democracy is without corruption and can't be bribed! I live in friggin Illinois, I know better than that...) I preferred Civ 3's fascism, it got the 'well yes, brutality can be efficient for construction/military stuff, but it's really not good for your people' across properly. However, nothing beats the Alpha Centauri system. Absolutely wonderful. And their technobabble was properly done, not like the Star Trek overdose or the Star Wars "it's magic shut up".

Hell, almost all of the SMAC technobabble (excepting the Psychic stuff) was based off of hard science and scientific theories in existence at the time back in 1998.
