Oh, and Bethesda defies all of these trends. At least there are some mavericks. TES5: Skyrim should be good. If it's as moddable as Oblivion, and has less bugs, I will be content to spend hundreds of hours exploring and enjoying.
I always take articles like this with a pinch of salt. While some of what they're saying holds true, there are, like Ingenious said, some companies who are defying these trends. Portal 2, instead of recycling jokes from the first one, created a bunch of its own, even if they're getting a bit old. Mass Effect has created an original sci-fi universe with a depth rivalling that of Star Trek or Star Wars, which the sequel has been expanding on heavily. And some DRM systems actually make sense- Steam and Minecraft, for instance. Technology going backwards I'm not too sure about though.

ME may have created an in-depth sci-fi universe but you can't really explore it or get involved with it. You can just shoot scripted enemies and take scripted quests.
Actually Ingenious has a point... I forgot about Bioshock, bloody good game. Of course it's 4 years old now, and I haven't tried Bioshock 2. (hey, wait...)
The article mentions that game makers are going to subscription-based models, so they can get money out of you forever. It also mentions they are being killed in the marketplace by makers like Zynga and their piddly little games like Farmville... the irony is those robbers have been using subscription-based since day-1. Oh their games are free to play, but to buy the "really cool stuff" you must purchase "dollars" (or crowns or whatever) with real money. Thieves.

Uh, yeah, Bioshock is a good game - I played through it for the first time a couple months ago - but I said Bioware.

You really think so?
Oblivion: Ground braking, and all round amazing, perhaps my favourite game ever.
Fallout 3: Dumbed down from oblivion, roaming world constricted, boring old EXP level up system, but still enjoyable.

I disagree; Mass Effect was so incredibly dull.
I don't want to bi**h with my crew about the rest of the crew
Why is everyone trying so hard to get laid on this ship?
I don't want to run down anymore identical corridoors
I don't want to play a half-baked shooter
I don't want to play a half-baked RPG
I don't want to press A to win the game via cut-scenes
I DO want to press Y to have Shepard gorge out his eyes with a rusty spoon in front of everyone and then throw himself out the airlock so I can get some sort of enjoyment from this £40 game.
Literally, it had no gameplay value at all. If you are going to make an interactive movie, make one, but don't stick pointless menial tasks inbetween so you can sell it as a game. I have RL work for that
