' Wrote:HEH, this indeed, is a fun game. i like to fly the spitfires, i love the sound of that rolls royce engine.
@Jinx: Go and get version 4.08 and go and fly ONLINE (via Hyperlobby) Then you know how much fun it makes, espacially if you are flying in squad.
@john: meh, darn cheaterspitter..........:crazy:Bf-109 and Focke are much better than your darn Spit. And the sound sounds much better with Soundmod. Ever tried a Soundmod?

Got Forgotten Battles today. It seems all very hard for me, so far at least. Going up or down seems to just jump the ship and targetting instead of sliding by. Never hit anything so far, except for once, but then I ended up blowing myself too.
Any advices for begginer? Perhaps Im doing something wrong. Passed third mission just now. Thanks god, I have a tough commander, if I had to do all this stuff by myself I'd be doomed.
This is a bit of an epic gravedig, which deserves a nice:
Still though, I noticed that I posted in this thread the first time around also, which prompted me to re-install both this and the original IL-2. Although the icons are on my desktop, I can't say I have even gotten around to playing them yet!
Just today Windows popped up with the 'unused icons' balloon, no surprises that those two icons were among the unused ones:P

Try turning down some of the difficulty settings. The 'jumping' your experiencing during climbs and dives is turbulence and head shake most, but also a few other factors. Turn off headshake and turbulence until you're more used to flying. Also, to help practice aiming use the time controls. When your going to shoot turn time down to 1/4th, then once you get better go to 1/2. Eventually you'll be able to fly with difficulty on full and aim without slowing the game down.
Once you get that down, then activate complex engine maintenance and master that.. Once you do you're good. Though if you just want to play for fun I'd keep complex engine off. Its just not worth the effort when you're playing to have fun and shoot things. Leave engine maintenance to FlightSim.
Also on aiming, get as close as possible. Something the tutorial says; 'If you think your close, get closer.' Distance of 5-15 is ideal. Every hit will do quite a bit of damage.
If you're using BF109s or other planes with heavy weaponry, aim for the center of the ship and pulverize them. If you using the P 40-51 series or similar planes with the scatter-effect shots, aim for the wings. Their guns just shred them off in a hit or two. Also, until your aim gets better, go with unlimited ammo. If you don't want to, thats fine too, but make sure your shots count if you do. Also if you have limited ammo and get in a dogfight.. Drop any bombs or tanks you are carrying. They aren't worth you getting shot up for. Getting rid of them will really help your turn and climb rates.
Thanks, Dab. More things make sense as of now. I'll try later today and see how I do. Perhaps do a couple of random encounters to practice. Some things of what that autopilot can do is crazy. If I was to dive that fast, not only I wouldnt hit the trucks, but also crash myself instead:D

:lol:Someone plays Freelancer quite a lot, eh?
Okay, i have something for you:
1. I don't know what stick youu use, but i would recommend Saitek X-52 Flight Control System. I use it, and half of the people of my squad use it, so yes, it's good.
2. If you plan to fly online somewhen, or if you want to play it quite often, get TrackIR4pro. Helps a lot.
3. Speed is your live. Try to be faster than your enemys, so you can climb over them and fall down onto them.
(but don't go too fast, many planes don't like high speed. You might fly with one wing less.)
Also some other things: To prcatise your aiming, fly in Quick Mission Builder against own planes. When you can bring them down easily, you can go on to fly against hostile planes, which will shoot on you.
Also, get yourself IL-2 1946.

Frustrating so far. Though now I manage to somewhat follow the enemy planes and even fire..near.. and around them. I've even managed to shoot down a parachute:D
This is a video of me trying to bring down a bomber. Perhaps you could comment on it. Ended up blowing up myself too, I think it's rather fun to watch  I dont know if the file runs normally too. It has some kind of odd game's format. http://uploading.com/files/2VIV86D9/uhhhh.ntrk.html
The problem might be the keyboard, but I really wouldnt know where to buy the stick around here. Quite frankly, Im not sure if it's worth it, espiacally if I end up not getting the hang off this game
P.S. Why do projectiles of german planes seem...green? Rheinland Military, anyone?
IL-2 is one of my all-time favourites, being a bit of a WW2 nut, and especially in the aerial department:P
'Tis a good game, rather old, but very realistic (bit too realistic for newbies with all the difficulty cranked up, but that's another of it's pros-the ability to edit the difficulty so easily and in such detail).
Advice for a newbie: turn off all the options relating to aircraft control/stability (flutter, torque, turbulence, head shake, etc) get a handle on flying and shooting with them off, before turning them on one by one. Making proper and full use of a 1940s era single seater is very different from flying anything more modern.
As for fighting, start off attacking bombers or similar slow planes. Find yourself a nice, open (not covered by too much defensive fire...tail gunner accuracy is one of the few flaws of the game) location, and put some fire into the engines/wing roots. Most 'planes carry fuel tanks in the wing roots and, with a nice set of incendiaries (take a look into some 50 cals or the like), you can easily light them up in a few rounds. Your other target is either the engine or pilot (preferably with cannons-the explosive shells are liable to do more damage here), but that requires a grasp of deflection shooting and lead, and that the enemy be so kind as to expose his flank to you in a chase fight.
As for the coloured projectiles, that is due to the way tracers worked. A small cannister of phosphorescent material in the rear of the tracer round would light up on leaving the barrel of the gun, resulting in a glow from the rear of the projectile, making it easily visible to the pilot...and everyone else in the vicinity. These were coloured in order to indicate which side the fire was coming from, and, thus, where your allies were.
After some lectures from Argonaut I shot down my first german! :yahoo:
The good: promoted to lieutenaunt, received order of the red star, shot down two bombers (though no clue, how the second went down, only remember fighting one:D). The bad: got cocky and went after full bomber wing, engine overheated and I had to catapult as a result. Squadron has only 9 planes yet. I hope they..give you more?
Now that I know about radiators, no one should be able to stop me.
