Listen Spazzy, coming from a person who's family has been in music, and audio for a loooooong time, first you must learn chords, then scales, then start learning songs, once you get good at playing scales and chords, your fingers should be trained fairly well, then you start learning a small chunk of an easy song at a time, DO NOT try to play a fast song fast, sure you can learn it, but just play it slow, then practice that song every day. You will become faster over time, it takes awhile to build of speed. Thats another thing also, at least do something with the guitar everyday, you skip one day, then you skip two, then you forget about it, same thing happened to me, in fact, its happening right now, haven't got one of my guitars out in a long time. Oh, and the cut fingers, fingers hurting, that's expected, you need to get cuts and tear your fingers up a bit, it builds up callouses (Makes your fingers stronger so that you don't feel pain as much). Just don't cut them on purpose or anything, let the natural guitar playing do that for you.:)
My sister self taught herself and is now really good. A good thing to do when you start to learn is learn to pluck. This means you are not using a pick. Pick a song like 'nothing else matters' by metallica or 'stairway to heaven'. You can't play those songs properly without learning to pluck.
Also- you can move to picking from finger plucking. But its very hard to do the reverse.
He's a really cool guy, and damn he knows how to "hold" that thing. No seriously, He's a genious. Dig the Beginners and Basics section on his website and you'll get it pretty quick.
They all give you advice and songs, but actually no one asked you which guitar did you buy, a classic or an acoustic, that's 2 really different things.
Your video sounds like nylon strings to me, so I assume it's a classic, then don't EVER try to play with beats, fingerstyle is your friend, cut really short your left hand fingers, and shape your right hand ones.
always tap your foot while playing, keep the tempo, and stop all if you make a mistake, start all over.
train your thumb, the most important thing is to get your thumb independent from the other fingers.
so while it takes care of the backing you play the melody.
and sommething which may sound stupid, but don't play guitar while sitting on your bed, that's a very bad idea, and makes you take a bad position.
here is the first song i learned on a guitar, tab inclued.
another one which i lerned few months after my first attempt to guitar, it sounds great, and is actually pretty easy to play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8IK-rzwdH4
