On Civ 5, so far, lots of great reviews.
Gametrailers, Shacknews and Destructoid all gave it stellar reviews so far. (9.3 or Higher and Buy It Recommendations)
Definitely getting civ5 I love the civilization games.
I own them all except civ1.
I wasted many, many hours on civ2 when I was a teenager.
' Wrote:Why not mod Civ5 to be like Alpha Centauri?
Yep.
Alpha Centauri was a great game, I still play it sometimes.
Also, there's an Alpha Centauri mod, called Planetfall for civ4 though.
' Wrote:That game was amazing. Civ 4 at least had some degree of variable gov't stuff, but it was still far too idealist and borderline silly. (Democracy is without corruption and can't be bribed! I live in friggin Illinois, I know better than that...) I preferred Civ 3's fascism, it got the 'well yes, brutality can be efficient for construction/military stuff, but it's really not good for your people' across properly. However, nothing beats the Alpha Centauri system. Absolutely wonderful. And their technobabble was properly done, not like the Star Trek overdose or the Star Wars "it's magic shut up".
I agree with everything you said there Sovereign.
I think Alpha Centauri did have the best government and diplomacy system too.
I will be buying Civ V, but not for some time. It comes out tomorrow, the day after I start my Fall quarter! If I were to snag it now, I'd be doomed. Also, I need another gig of ram, since it requires at least 1.5G.
Just bought it. Sitting here trying to get the damn plastic off it.
UPDATE:
Still trying to get used to the interface. Looks nice so far though, combat system looks like it's improved, although I'll have to see how the late game works out if or when a group of archers kills my mechanized infantry.:D
I think my favourite feature of Civ5 is its minimization. It doesn't "minimize" like a normal program, it sits in the background, always on top of the desktop, and when you alt+tab switch between applications, it's pretty much flawless. I was talking to people on MSN and Skype while my turn processed, so that was pretty cool.
I may or may not update my findings depending on if I cba, or remember.:D
