I'd like to apply for the moderator post as well, though I haven't been actively here as long as many of the people here.
I have experience in moderating both forums and games in the past, typically on roleplaying boards and game servers. Even not as a moderator, I do my best to try to help out anyone that needs it in any way I can, whether they're new and they need help, they're having a conflict with someone else and they need a neutral arbiter, or they just have a problem and need someone to talk to about it. I enjoy helping people, and I strive to be fair in whatever ways I can.
I have experience with the controls on Invision boards and ZetaBoards, so forum moderation isn't completely alien to me. I'm the faction leader of the Gaian Underloch here on Discovery, and I'm reasonably active both ingame and on the forums, though more in a roleplaying sense than messing around in Flood or wherever else. I try to make my posts meaningful when I contribute to a discussion, since repeating everything other people have already said is just frustrating and, ultimately, doesn't accomplish much at all.
I'm a native English speaker, and I'd like to think that I can use it well. I don't think I'm very well known here in the Discovery community, but I appreciate you taking the time to look at this application.
Yeah, alright. After spending all this time I here I'd like to give something back to the community. Considering the amount of time I spend on the forums, too, I could certainly spend them being useful rather than wasting time.
Who am I?
*points to profile link* I'm one of those infamous ANZLAGgers who you love to hate (while PvP'ing). Technically speaking, I've been here since 2006, when I first made this forum account after being suggested to do so by a player in game. That was v4.79 IIRC. I played for a few months before trying out other mods and eventually getting bored of Freelancer. I took a rather long hiatus until the start of 2011, when I dug out my Freelancer CD once again and found a rather different version of Discovery - it's grown a lot since then!
What do I do here?
For those who don't know me personally, you will have seen me around the Comms Channels doing things for Ageira and HF. I'm the current faction leader of Ageira|, and have been so for about a year now. As for the Hellfire Legion, I'm the third in command (along with ChillerMiller). However, until such time as our First and Second in command stop being AWOL, I am effectively the faction leader. Late last year I was attempting a revival of the |Maquis faction, but that didn't work out so I've since moved on. Other factions I've dabbled in include [C], DHC-, and |IDF.
I've got some indie characters too, but they're not particularly well known.
As part of an initiative to develop a better game environment, I helped bring the Big Three (Ageira, DSE, USI) in with the Liberty Lawfuls in order to set up a well-rounded house Government. That's been fairly successful so far. At the moment I am admininstrating the Liberty Bounty Board in its entirety (registration and payments).
Why should I be a Moderator?
- While I have no issue with expressing my opinions on a particular subject, I know when to draw the line and to separate personal feelings from business.
- I have a strong knowledge of the forum and server rules.
- I'm a native English speaker (some might even call me a "grammar nazi"), plus I'm fluent in Ukrainian and know some basic French.
- Never been sanctioned.
- I'm an organisational nut. It pains me to see threads placed in the wrong subforum when it could be easily corrected by some Mod guidance.
- You don't have a lot of Mod/Admin coverage in my time zone, which is unfortunate. I could remedy that.
- I've got an "itch" for contentious threads. I reckon I can pick a lock coming from a mile away...
- I would like to make Discovery a better place for all the players here. It's one of the reasons I got involved with the infocard-writing team for 4.86 development, and I'm learning how to design bases as well.
[font=Palatino Linotype]So finally the event we've all been waiting for: [color=#FF9900]my application.
Why should i be a moderator?
Well besides the many many obvious reason I am an incredible active forum user with a close to unlimited knowledge of the forum / server rules, respected by the whole community as an honest, serious and fair member, able to interact in many languages and forms of communication (namely english, german and french) and a Freelancer online experience of almost 8 years.
After playing discovery for over a year (!) now (and enjoying it), i think it is more than suitable to give some of my precious time to the community as a sign of my appreciation.
ive been on disco for a long time<sense 2008> i maynot be to active in game but im nearly allways on the fourms, discovery ,to date has been the longest mod ive been apart of.
sure i complain or mabye have angered a few people, debates happen so do differing opinions, but ive never once gotten any form of sanction or warning or any punishment ,a record im damn proud of.
with the crap that goes on on this server. <trolling people ignoreing newbs and the like> i feel its my time to try to give something back,i was a newbie once,we all were.
as for my moderator experence...its mixed i have no real big experence but im not a complete fail at it either
why i feel i should be supported: in truth thats up to the comunity i simply feel i deserve a shot if the comunity and admin team feel it warnting so be it... if not so be it as well
so heres my application,do with it what you see fit
I would like to be part of the moderation team, but why would I want to have all the additional work that I wont get paid for?
The answer is pretty simple, I want to help you to keep this place running while trying to improve it a bit. We are here to have fun so we should be able to get it without all the drama that occasionally happens.
Now how do I know how to do this job?
To be honest, I dont know how to do it yet, but I have faith that you are going to show me how a mod does things around here. I think I have been here long enough to see how things work, so that it shouldnt be too hard to handle the job.
And why do I think that I can do this?
I believe in respect, respect for people and their ideas. I try not to judge someone for things they did in the past and I think of myself that Im able to stay calm in nearly all situations and prefer to do things in a way that doesnt involve stress for anyone involved.
I also think its only fair to tell you that I am not going to have too much time for disco in the near future, I should be able to have a look at the forums every day, even if its not for hours.
Yes, I've been stalking the forum while supposedly being gone. No, I can't really help it.
I've been around for more than 3 years now, joined the forum a year after I started playing here. I've actually kept a low profile for the first two years, have only started being active on the forum in the past year or so.
The reason I'm writing this is, well, I can't stay away. And I've been aiming at becoming a moderator since the previous time Cannon allowed new applications.
Previous experience includes being a moderator on the old =CR= faction forum. Not Invision, it was Zetaboards I believe. Not exactly high traffic, but ended up doing most of the forum based jobs, so have knowledge on how most things work.
So, like I said, I've been around for a couple of years now, worked my way up in =CR= and [HF], all the way up to leading one and co-leading the other, with Max. Was =CR='s Recruitment Officer for about 2 years, so I'm used to helping people, newbies or vets. I've also played a small part in helping C.C.'s latest LaBrise reboot.
Edit: Figured I'd add the fact that I have quite a bit of modding experience, and some of my work will be in the 4.87 mod version. So yeah, I've been doing work in the community for some time now.
Most people that know me can attest that I'm clear headed, can work under pressure, friendly, calm, and can easily discern between friendly jokes that everyone enjoys and targeted trolling. I'm used to being counted on to do complete an assignment. I like to know all the sides of an issue before making a decision. The few times in which I haven't done that have cost me plenty. I believe everyone deserves a second chance, and an equal amount of respect and understanding.
I'm not a native English speaker, but nobody has complained about my slightly east european accent so far. I live in the GMT+2 timezone and I generally have a fair amount of free time on my hands. I have been sanctioned twice, if i remember correctly, and was jailed along with the rest of =CR= once.
Heh, talking about yourself is kind of hard, to be honest. Not to mention there's a fairly good chance I'll facepalm when I read this post a bit later...but I guess we have to give it a shot, right?
Well, I've been playing on this server and been participating in this community for a while. Been in a whole lot of factions, did a lot of forum and ingame Roleplay, and organised a lot of things.
Making a claim of being unbiased would be kind of silly. No one's unbiased. However, I do think I've done a fairly good job of staying within the community for the past 3 years or so, and got along with people, not participating in most of the major arguments that pop up from time to time.
Pretty simple reason, really. We take ourselves a bit too seriously at times, and then arguments happen. Traditionally, it's part of a Moderator's job to ensure that community spirit is maintained. This is a gaming community, and gaming is of course, prior to anything else, for relaxing. Therefore, moderators here aim to keep things relaxed.
I'm applying because I feel I fit the relaxed criterion. I haven't performed any gross misuses of power (that I know of) and for the most part, have listened to a whole lot of help requests, and a lot of arguments from a lot of sides and a lot of different people.
I represent the [color=orange]Sigs Are Too Damn Large party[color=#FFFFFF].
People post here twenty hours a day, seven days a week,
but don't care to check their sigs size.
Community keeps feeding the trolls,
Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
My main goal is to provide help in keeping the forums clean,
metagaming to its minimum,
and the trolls removed.
This is moderators as usual,
Playing a ten year-old spaceship game.
This is not gonna happen.
With The Sigs Are Too Damn Large movement
I'm here to represent people who're fed up with their browsers [font=Comic Sans Ms]STRETCHED[color=#000000].
They're being laid off right now, as I speak.
Listen! Someone's little brother just cheated, but admins won't believe. Do you know why?
Cause his sig is too damn wide.
- - - -
As a karaoke expert, only when (drunk), I will not point out any other
issues right here, because our members can't sleep at night, with the
horrid nightmares about a Barge.
And that's only because the Sigs are too Damn Large.
[color=#FFFFFF]P.S: This post includes the mandatory Comic Sans.
P.P.S: This is not a troll app, I'm dead serious.
I've been around this server for years, much moreso in the early days. I can't even find most of my old posts anymore and was amazed this account still existed when I tried to log in again.
All I've got to offer is through a lot of observation (and one or two sanctions when I was getting started and didn't get the rules) I've got a pretty good idea of where/when things are enforced and no ties to any existing forums drama. I'm more interested in keeping the peace so everyone has fun.
I'm also a network engineer by trade, which leaves me with a lot of time during the day where I'm waiting for an application/operating system to install and have a few minutes to kill before I can move on to the next step. That means I can easily check in often, on most days this gives me the availability of someone surgically attached to a keyboard if anything's needed.
There are much, much more established players applying but I thought I'd throw my hat in.
So, as for the "why?" - I spend quite of time on the forums, and I am quite confident I can improve the environment and pretty much glad to help the discovery community whenever I get the chance to.
Anyway, I guess the admin team know me already, with my pros and cons, so does the community.
Will I try my best to make this community a better place? Yes, even not as a mod. Helping people, factions in need and trying my best to assist with bugs.
That'd be it, rest is up to you I guess.
Oh and my name is Amit, for those who ever wondered.
