This might be pushing it for complicatedness, but..
Have an ID assigned to every character. To find out Jimbob's ID, you'd type in /id Jimbob (say its 666) and then you could transfer using /transfer 666 1000000 . I mean, yeah, typos would still happen, but it's harder to mess up numbers than it is typing a 20-character name, tag and all.

We already have that built into the game- just type
/ids
And your screen will fill with a wall of green text.
I remember some function would allow you to PM a character based on a portion of their name. Like if you had someone named JimmybobJoebob, you could simple type in Joebob and it would activate PM with that person selected.. I dont remember what this was on, but I remember it vividly.

What happens when you type in a faction tag? Who'd get PM'd? Everyone with that tag or just the first?

Ah, yeah, I've seen this before with TSRP. Quite effective, though I've never been in a TS game with over a hundred people..
And if there were players:
-Jimbob
-JimbobJimmybob
-JillianBobbifer
Typing in "Jimbob" or "bob" would do nothing (no one would get a PM), but typing in "Jil" or "Jimm or their whole name, "JimbobJimmybob" would send a PM out.
