It varies too much, you might hate what you are not acknowleged about.
I myself prefer manga, and I as well feel a bit irritated about spinned-up and popular works, which are not suiting my tastes.

Same here. Only a few (e.g. Akagi, Kaiji) brings my attention and only Slayers are the most "mainstream" (for Westerners) manga and anime I've ever read.
Would love to read Light Novel though...
Anyone have read Slumdunk? I would try that, because there's re-release of all mangas that one Polish distributor brought in 2000s and 1990s. I have collected all What's Michael? mangas, because they are very cute! Love cats.
I've had a read through the maze of posts and the various opinions about the subject and here is my opinion.
I like anime. Mostly because I find it better than a large amount of the stuff on TV these days, although they have been playing re-runs of "Kingswood Country" recently.
To be clear, I'm not currently in one of my "OMG MUST WATCH ANIME" phases, I'm mostly watching it at work on night shift to help burn up the time.
As for people who aren't into anime, that's fine too, it's ok with me if you don't agree on my likes/dislikes and I'm not going to try and force my view on anyone, it's just not worth the hassle.
I've avoided this thread since now, so I guess I'll ring in.
I like anime, and for three main reasons.
1. I have a problem, in actual recorded shows, with RL actors, I have trouble seeing the character as the character, I always see that person as an actor, not the role he's playing. In Breaking Bad, I always saw Walter White as Bryan Cranston, and it kinda ruins the immersion for me.
On the other hand, anime, the characters look alot less human than actual actors, so I'm able to see that character as the actual character better, which makes me get deeper into the show and enjoy it more.
2. Western TV sucks, simple as that. I have cable with like 200 channels, and every time I turn on the TV, absolutely nothing good is on 9 times out of 10. And if some show I like -IS- on, it's usually a rerun from several years ago that I've seen 20 times. Only reason I would keep cable is because of sports.
Anime on the other hand, there's a wide variety of genres, animation styles, etc, and there's always another anime out there to watch that you'll enjoy (if you like anime that is). Plus, cable will costs you $30-$50 USD a month, you can download pretty much any anime in existence for free off the internet.
3. Music. Western TV is long past the days where they bother making decent music for the show, including opening/closing themes and background music. I enjoy music, one of the reasons I keep watching an anime I've started is because I want to hear the music in it, usually the opening theme. I'm weird, I know.
Western TV though, I can't actually think of a single show that has original music in it that I like...
Western comedy sucks these days too, while I enjoy eastern/Japanese comedy.

i hate anime because of the stupid fans
they act just like furries and bronies and think they're somehow better even though they're just as fuarking obnoxious and even more socially retarded
also my ex was really into anime and it contributed to her unrealistic standards of beauty and i almost killed myself because of that relationship (also the reason i dont like the letter a- I know it is flood but you should know better than that - Tunicle)
edit: SAYS THE CHICK WITH THE ANIME AVATAR YES I KNOW ThAT IM A FUCKING RETARD
