Discovery no matter how you take a look at it, will probably suffer a blow in some way or another. Players will leave, perhaps some people will stay.
It may even be the end of Discovery, who knows. It all depends on Chris Robert's turnout on the game. I would assume there will be a few loyal members who will remain, perhaps people will stay for the roleplay reason. I can't imagine being an open server game, Star Citizen will get that many Roleplayers.
Well if the modding team and players moved over to a Discovery modded S.C. I would say this community would just evolve to play on a new platform.
At least those that wanted to.
I'm not sure if we'd want to recreate Discovery as it is now on the Star Citizen engine. There's no doubt that some modding communities might spring up with work inspired by Freelancer, but I would think that a majority of the community would relish the opportunity to explore new territory. Concepts such as a parrallel universe, or alternate timeline, could help merge Freelancer-inspired themes with SC mechanics.
what about a slingshot thing that slings you from one end of a planet to the other?
also put a fuel limitation so that you wont be able to solo around the planet even if you wanted to
also, trade lanes and jujmp gates obviously.
a shortcut through the planet like in total recall (2012)
No atmosphere? GTFO.
The propeller is the greatest invention of all time.
I think this could work pretty well, but there'd have to be a system where you have to own Freelancer to install Discovery Star Citizen, sort of like that mod which recreates Morrowind in Skyrim.

Professional mod-tools will be packaged with the game, not to worry.

An alternate universe would be the best Idea probably, incorporating the current ships (Constellation, Aurora, 300i, etc.) into current discovery/freelancer lore would work out well. RSI could be a sub-division of Ageira (Or a co-owned shipbuilding firm with DSE.) Insurance could actually be provided by IC....
However, the entire idea of converting discovery assets into the CE3 include making high poly ship models for each ship, and then creating an interior for them all. The Liberty Dreadnought for example. Multiply this by the sheer number of ships in Discovery... and you have a metric boatload of assets that need creating. A way of minimizing that would be releasing the addon house by house. And thats not to mention the economy system that would have to be re-worked. Xoria currently uses a spreadsheet system to figure out buy/sell prices (which creating a new of such systems is a pain in the rear, fyi) and add on the dynamic economy....
While I would love to see a Discovery mod for SC, It really just looks like it would be to much work to pull off without it crashing and burning.
My 2 cents.
Power does not corrupt. Fear corrupts... perhaps the fear of a loss of power.
