For some reason, I can't go onto the internet. The connection status says "Limited or no connectivity". I click "Repair", and I get this messege;
"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following problem cannot be completed:
Renewing your IP address
For assistance, contact the person who manages your network"
Ok, so I guess this is an IP problem? What do I do?
Don't say as the network manager, because he doesn't have a clue. Also, don't say just use the PC your using to write this message, because I'm not technicly ment to be on this...
If anyone could help in anyway, I desparetly need the internet for many reasons, a high one being Discovery and an unpaid loan....
I have the same problem connecting to one network, wirelessly and through a LAN cable. If someone could help, it would be appreciated.
I am a long-absent Supreme Commander, Executive Commander, Grand Admiral, Fleet Admiral, and Captain in the mighty Hellfire Legion. I have returned, and am on an urgent mission from Drake Thastus to return the Legion to its former glory, and to claim the galaxy for its own. Only then will I be able to rest.
RP Story (Still deciding whether or not to finish)
First off Its rather late here (sometime in the morning actually), soo my gramar blah blah blah, im tired, and now im going to bed.
I'm writing this first for windows xp and 2000(well kinds for win2k), and 2nd for vista (Ive not done this before in vista is why it comes 2nd)
These be DHCP problems (DHCP is a set of code that assigns ip addresses to computers) If you don't have access to the DHCP server (routers have a built in DHCP server) and you remember the IP information that was assigned to your computer you can enter it in manually and connect to the network. (if it hasn't changed) This information would include the ip address itself, the subnet mask (usually 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0 (in the USA not sure about other countries)) the default gateway (this is the ip address of the box (router or computer or other device) that is where the internet is coming from (in a home environment this will most likely be a router, a DSL modem, a cable modem, or some combination of the 3) If the box that the internet comes from is also the DHCP server (if its a router than this is most likely the case) then its usually your ip address except the very last number is a 1 (for instance 192.196.0.3 would be my computers address, and the routers (default gateway) would be 192.168.0.1) If there you have a cable/dsl modem, and its not the DHCP server (the thing that gives out ip addresses) then the Ip addresses are something you internet provider controls. if you cant remember it, and youve tried your ip adress with changing the last number to a 1 then you'll have to call the company that you get the internet from. Now there is a bit more information you need before you can connect to the internet. This information is the DNS server. (DNS is what translates the written names of websites (www.discoverygc.com) into something computers understands (ip addresses and the likes), it does a few other things too.) Dns information is a little harder to find. If you have a router the DNS server is sometimes the router, so you would enter in the ip address of the router. This will be the same number as the default gateway. If you dont have a router, or your ISP has it set up so that you connect to their DNS server it gets a little bit harder. You could try calling the Internet Service Provider (isp) as they will give it to you with little trouble (once you prove that you are a customer)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The easiest way to find out all this information if you don't already have it is to call the ISP. The second easiest way is if you have another computer connected to the same box that gives your computer the internet, a router for example.
If the computer that is connected to the box that gets you the internet is running windows xp, or 2000 read this. If its running vista skip ahead.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Start up the computer and log in (you may have to be logged in as admin, it depends on how the computer is set up)
Go to start, click run. a little box that you can type stuff in pops up. In that box Type cmd, this brings up a window with a black background and white letters. (this is good old MsDOS) after that window has poped up type in ipconfig/all
It then should list a variety of information.
This information will vary depending on what hardware(all the green cards inside the metal or plastic case) is in your computer. What we are interested in is the IP Address, the Subnet Mask, the Default Gateway, and DNS Servers (Dns servers is not always listed, thats why its harder to find)
Over on the right side (there are a bunch of periods between those words and some numbers) is the information we need. Copy down all the number (make sure you don't make any mistakes)
This needs to be typed in the computer that cannot connect to the internet/network. Once you have this written down skip over the next section (it explains how you do this in windows vista)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Start up the computer and log in (you may have to be logged in as admin, it depends on how the computer is set up)
Click on the little windows logo (its a blue button in the lower left(unless you changed it)
It pops up a window and at the bottom there is a little box that says start search
Type cmd in this box and press enter
Doing this brings up a window with a black background and white letters. (this is good old MsDOS) after that window has poped up type in ipconfig/all
It then should list a variety of information.

Go to the computer that canot connect to the internet, start it up and log in as the admin account. (if you cant try doing this anyways it might still work)In windows xp follow the next section (i don't know it right off the top of my head for 2000, if i need to ill look it up). If your running windows Vista skip ahead to the next section.
I assume that your running windows in its default configuration (its most common)
go to start, then click on Control Panel.
That brings up a window with a blue background (again, unless it was changed it it will be blue) click on the icon that says "Network and Internet Connections"
This changes the contents of the window to stuff that deals with how your computer talks to other computers (internet stuff) Click on the icon that says "Network Connections"
This makes the window turn white, and displays all the network connections you have. It usually displays one connection per device, if you have both a wireless network card and a wired network card (new laptops usually have both, a desktop will usually have only a wired network card) right Click on the icon that represents your connection to the internet (usually says network connection then a number, or Wireless Network Connection then a number) That makes a little menu Click on properties down at the bottom of this menu. This brings up another window. This window allows you to make changes to the setting regarding this network connection. You have may have to scroll through it to find it but find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Once you found it click it once, this makes it turn blue. Below that box there are 3 boxes, the left one says install, the middle says uninstall and the one on the right says properties. Click on the one that says properties. Clicking on this brings up another window. It has several grayed out boxes, and some circle buttons. Click on the circle that is next to "Use the following IP address:" Doing this ungreys the boxes. Type in your ip address where it says ip address (if you had to get this from another computer, just change the last number, usually adding one to it works, if that doesn't just keep adding one till you find an avialble number (two computers cannot have the same address) Then type in the subnet mask in the box to the right of the words "subnet mask" this one will be the exact same as the other computer(usually 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0). Then type in default gateway in the box to the right of the words "default gateway" This will be the same as the other computer.
Now click on the button thats next to the words "Use the following DNS server addresses" This ungreys two more boxes
Where it says "Preferred DNS server:" type in the DNS servers address (might be the same as the default gateway, especially when you have a router)
Don't bother with the Alternate DNS server, unless you know it (you can usually get away without useing one, this is backup incase the preferred one doesn't work)
Then click the OK button in the lower right. It may pop up with a box that says you need to restart the computer, well its right, you need to restart your computer, go ahead and do that now. If it dosnt pop up with a box saying you have to restart your computer, close all the open windows and restart your computer.
Skip ahead to the next section (this one talks about vista)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again I assume that your running windows in its default configuration (its most common) Click on the little windows button in the lower left (its blue) go to control panel (its in the lower right) click on Network and Internet. Click on Network and Sharing Center (at the top) And in that window, on the left side it says tasks, and has a bunch of things you can click on. Click on "Manage Network Connections" The window then changes and displays all the Network Connections your computer has. In that new window click on the button in the lower left that says "Properties"
In the middle of that window it has a bunch of icons and words next to them, find the one that says Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv6 is new, and not yet commonly used) Click it and it turns blue. Then click the button that says properties below that box.
If your not able to connect to the internet now, go back and make sure that you entered in the information error free. Check it against what you wrote down, and what the other computer says (if you got your information from the other computer). After correcting the error(s) and restarting the computer, your still unable to connect, try changing the last digit in your computers ip address. If you know the ip address you have is valid, you outta luck, cause im tired (itys now 1:23 am) and my mind is dead.
I must apologize for my response, it was well late, and i was tired, i have little doubt that its little better an hogwash. But who knows mehby it will fix your problems.
