My junker char KILLED his father, because he discovered some years ago that his father was a gallic junker spy in Sirius working against Bretonia onboard the family frigate, and my char is a bretonian junker (not a complete citizen because he's junker, but he loves Bretonia). His mother died by natural causes.
So my character did not leave it to others to kill his father, himself killed him. And he don't need revenge for that, he use his gallic part of the family (a gallic junker char, his uncle, who never accepted to work for the Crown) to make good business with gallic drugs.
Quite frankly, I think it's a good idea to merely keep them. And accept the applications. If they worked enough to create what they have, why deny them?
We all were in that position. For example, the first faction I joined. The Liberty Navy. (don't hurt me) -- I accidentally put it in their actual subforum instead of the recruitment thread.
From there, it was 'very' badly made. My grammar was horrible. My spelling was horrible. My story was sub-par. I had high hopes.
I was accepted, and grew from that experience. The only way I had was upwards. Look at me now, I can actually churn out decent stories. All I needed was that one group to get me going in Freelancer.
Don't deny people because they're bad at writing. The only way they will go is up.

Not all the people search for vengeance...
My char, Emilio Gonzalves, closed his family in the house and set it in fire... in the slums of Los Angeles... you'r char is raging, mine is plain evil
Andrew Mort killed his father and his mistress with a toeclipper.
And I wrote about it in detail
EDIT: Anyway, about the whole killing off your parents thing, it is just a simple way to hint at the fact that the character in question might have some sort of psychological trauma present. Not really as subtle, but it works.
