Right, you've probaby read the title and though.. what??
but please give it a little attention.
What im suggesting, Is tax, real tax. for the houses..
now, with the new transfers (with thanks to the digital bank development, for intergalactic credit transfer).
it is possible that traders, willing ones can pay a small tax on their trade, Im not biased, as i trade myself.. I just felt while doing it
"Why arent I supporting anything in doing this trade?"
trade is the lifeblood of a house's money making, but they get nothing for it! and after a rather nice trader gave my BAF character 1mil for the "good service to traders" i wondered, maybe there are nice (//RPfriendly) traders who dont mind small donations to assist the house they trade with. and now im not talking 1mil payments, even 1% tax on every 1mil profit, thats 10k, nothing! in a large transport, you can make 5mil profit on a single run, and to donate 50k of that to the house you delivered the goods to, or from is really nothing to dent the huge profit. (1% is just thrown in there).
This is especialy appealing to house factions setup within a house, like BMM, Gateway etc.
To me, it does not make sense that military characters should have to swap from hunting pirates and such to do a quick diamond/niobium run to pay for ballistics. and should all the tax pile up, even a wage can be given to police and armed forces, enhancing the experience (sort of?).
now for some obvious problems, people might say "i dun wnt to pay tax". and while i dont suggest it be a crime not to pay it, though it should be perhaps.
the unwillingness to pay tax brings out a smell of greed, a desire to hold every tiny penny profit so you can go buy some stupid cap ship or something, and that kind of behavior should be discouraged, and this would be a way to do so. (plus it gives police something else to do, more real laws).
Edit: i forgot, if a trader is pirated or the goods damaged in some way, he'd not pay tax, encouraging law enforcement to actualy go make sure trade passes safely through its borders (so it gets tax!).
Thank you if you took the time to read this, its my little ramblings that might well be something.
should it not be taken by major players, I'd be happy to just do it myself, pay a small amount to whomever may be concered, as part of a tax paying trader. (though someone had better provide me with something to pay to, armoury etc).
Completely against it namely because the money does not go to the Nation as such but to the player factions that only have authority by being bigger than others.
I have ample cash and frankly, couldn't care less about losing some but what I do care about is where I lose it to.
If someone wants to make a faction that controls all of say, Liberty, space then they should fund it themselves.
I wholly support this; say, standard American service tax of 6%. Make it mandatory, too. Kusari and Rheinland would especially profit from this; Diamond/Niobium power traders would begin to feel the pinch and might even be incited to roleplay.
Oh, and Zoners naturally wouldn't be exempt. No, not even "Zoners". They'd be GLAD to pay any tax in order to maintain their neutral status.
in the freelancer universe, almost all the players are gypsies. they have no real home and travel around. - and like gypsies, they pay no tax, ( thats the point of it )
in terms of roleplay - paying means to receive something for it. - sadly, freelancer is not complex enough to support such a concept, not even remotely.
so, i wouldn t support "taxes" - they cannot be enforced, the players get nothing in return for it and it does not at all improve the roleplay or roleplay perception of a faction.
It would go to individuals, rather than the government. That isn't right - it should be shared out as wages, but there needs to be someone responsible for that. Also, Bretonian tax would only go to QCRF - what about the BAF indies (like myself) that help out all the time?
We don't want to join QCRF because of its restrictions - you have nothing above a bomber that I've seen, a nation needs cap ships - we provide this but shouldn't be rewarded?
It has its drawbacks, on Jinx's point, what people get in return is the law enforcement actualy attempting to protect the trade that goes through its borders, instead of just say, sticking to New york while pirates attack trade through Cali.
its unfortunate about the indie thing, though i dont think its exactly hard to acommadate, whats to stop the one who accumilates the cash to give to indies? it encourages those indies to sign up to some kind of registry, so they can get their due, plus establishing who they are, also encouraging some kind of RP.
while it goes to one person, that person may well be in a faction, but.. do you not trust your fellow human beings enough to expect them to horde what seems as something quite small? im fairly sure there are enough trustworthy people in this community, atleast I want to believe so.
I think there should be tax, but as said, its not enforcable. Rarely would they offer it, (personally I would) and we can't be halting every trader to say 50k or die!
Because then we're threatening them... so theres no threat if they don't pay.

An interesting idea, but I'm not sure I buy it.
Take the Bretonian system, for instance. Bowex and BMM have exclusive licenses with the government. Gateway doesn't use government services for much in-game; corporate taxing is something that happens "behind the scenes." If police or navy help us in a situation, we're happy to pay. Plus, we've even donated to BPA before. Basically, you'd have us here not only paying taxes to the "government," but with their licensing to BMM and Bowex, helping out our competitors. In player terms, one faction doesn't exist to support another.
Other considerations: we have our own security wing, or we hire out. Plus, this would be a major headache to keep track of the numbers.
Im kinda splitted in this one ... On one hand i like the idea , but i see it as rather useless, not to mention i would just be giving away money to someone else without getting anything in return. But if the money we payed had SOME use , like for example , tax playing characters would get escorted on their trading routes ( not for long though , maybe just like 1-2 trade lanes , or untill he/she reaches the JH or JG). But still , traders usually pay escorts for that , so it would be kinda useless ...
