Doc stopped a moment and admired. A smile crossed his face as he did so in complete silence. He wanted to think he was right in that this is what they needed. Hilda needed time away from the military and Gretel needed her mother, not a soldier. It looked like both things were happening. Quietly, he poured some more coffee and returned to where he was working.
Getting a strong feed on his com, he began looking for the missing page, wondering if he would be able to tap into the right frequency to find it. It seemed that one page would answer a lot of questions.
Doc would quickly find a lot of newspaper reports about Hilda after she had recovered and how she was the 'Miracle of Ludwigsberg' for her walking again. But after all the fluff he would find Gunter's files on at the time fiancee. Most of them seemed to be diary entries. The first relevant entry read.

It seemed he was stubborn as the battleship Hilda commanded and that he had loved her very very much.

He smiled a bit as he read the writings of her late husband. It was a very touching read. A man that would go through any measure to give the woman he loved what she wanted. It made him think a moment as he removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes a bit. Thoughts of how he fell so deeply for Midori and how he let work ruin a good marriage haunted him for a bit. With a mild head shake, he softly muttered to himself, "That could still be me. Dammit, Chris, you were right."
Putting his glasses back on and taking a sip of coffee, he continued. He could make one clear assessment, his patient was stronger than the tears showed.
The more Doc read the more he learned that Gunter was will to try anything to to make Hilda walk again. And never ever wanted to give up even though it seemed Hilda did at one point.

Gott... the amout of times Doktors keep saying for me to give up is getting... on mien nerves... I will never give in... Hilda is all I think about... though latley she has been thinking... about what she wants me to do if I cannot find a way... s...she said that if she still cannot walk by die time she is twenty... t...that... I..I... shoud end her... suffering... Gott.. I..I... cannot... I don't want to... I will not be able to live with myself...
It Hilda couldn't live with the thought of both being confind to a wheelchair and being unable to have children. It also seemed thaf the latter was the worse of the two.

Doc was largely satisfied with what he was reading. She defied the odds and gave birth to three children. Miscarriages weren't uncommon and it was likely due to stress from the death of her husband. Medically, he could find no reason why she still couldn't have more if she so choose. Perhaps when the grieving process settled that someone new would come along.
He softly smiled as he sipped his coffee. Bonding with her children was exactly what she needed.....that and a little doctorly advice. He didn't feel so outclassed after all.
Still, he wanted to know more about her back surgery. That was nothing that a good physical examination wouldn't reveal to him. For now, he continued reviewing what was in front of him before looking out a window. The snow was falling and it was pretty. Doc in a robe, steam coming off of his coffee as he looked through a semi-frosty window was like a painting from an old time past.
As Doc watched he would see two boys walking towards the house both seemed to have large bedrolls on their backs. Sometimes one would stop and throw a snowball at the other usually the smaller one was doing the throwing.
Soon they made it to the front door and shouted loudly in Rheinlandic and Doc heard Hilda seeming swear also in Rheinlandic as it seemed they woke her up. "Wilhelm... would you speak English... we have a guest..." "Oh... do we?" He said walking up the stairs. "Ja... he is here... to help us... with Gretel..." "Oh... like the last... five... OW!" It seems like Hilda had slapped him. "Don't you start... I don't want you to... revert the progress... made..."
It seems that had made Wilhelm either shut up or think as soon his brother August spoke.
"Who is this... Doktor?" August said. "Doktor Doliday..." Hilda replied. "Isn't... he that dentist?" "He is more that just a dentist... August..." Hilda replied.

Doc was bothered by Hilda giving her son a slap, even if it wasn't hard. It brought to mind some of the abuse he had seen at the Port Jackson refugee colony. He knew of her military nature but it still bothered him. His cup in one hand, he headed into the area where the two young boys arrived.
He was in his robe still and the contents of his cup were still steaming. Doc wore an easy smile to meet the boys.
"Guten tag, Gentlemen," he said to them. He gave a kind smile to Hilda and Gretel.
As Doc entered the room he can see the two boys the older one was almost a spitting image of Hilda if not that he have blue eyes, the other had blonde hair and brown eyes. Wilhelm was rubbing his arm a little but as Doc spoke they both look at him.
"Er... he is a..." Wilhelm then stopped talking as Hilda grew slightly red in the face. "Never mind... Mutter..." He then said. "Guten Tag... Herr Doktor..." His younger brother August said with a slight smile. "You are helping little Gretel?" He asked with a hopeful tone. "I hope... you... will succeed... I..." He sighs and looks down. "I... want mein little sister back..." He then wipes his eyes a little but Wilhelm just sighs. "Come on... do you really think that..." He then spots his mother who has gone very red in the face and then runs out the room. "I... miss Vater..." August said sighing again.

"It's a pleasure to meet you both," Doc said kindly, shaking each one's hand, "I do wish it was under better circumstances. If you'll excuse me, let me get your mother relaxed and I'll get back." He gave them each a comforting pat on the shoulder as he went after Hilda who was in another room sobbing into a chair.
Putting his arm around her, he just did his best to comfort her.
"Remember, they need your strength. They draw from it. He stayed long enough to settle her a bit before he let her put herself back together while he returned to the boys.
"I know... they need mien strength but... Wilhelm... he..." She sighs. "He... seems to... have written... off... Gretel... a..as... as... non treatable as the last... five Doktors didn't... help her..." She wipes her eyes before continuing. "It... makes me... so angry that... he... does it..." She sighs again. "Gretel is mien only daughter... und I lost a part of myself when... she... j..just..." She tears up and starts crying. "She... she..." Hilda stops and starts crying more.
If Doc ran his hand down her back he would feel a lump about halfway down it which seemed to make Hilda twitch ever so slightly.
