If anyones taken the time to Roleplay in a capital ship, Odds are you've spoken as several people.
ex: Me on the LAS Freedom as (so far) Krusa, Jac, and one Salem-Jansen knows well, Dr. Trall.
Over the weekened i had a random idea that just happened out of boredom, which was placing mutliple ships into a model instead of just 1.
Just as a test I did 1 Executioner/Avenger model + 2 Defender/Guardian models, and placed them in a sort of formation you'd normally see patrols in (lead ship with the other two out to the sides closely behind) and hardpointed them as they would normally be.
Ship I would do this for are: Rheinland Military (3 Wraths), Liberty Navy (1 Avenger, 2 Executioners), Kusari Naval Forces (3 Chimaeras), Bretonian Armed Forces (3 Templars) VHFs Rheinland Federal Police (3 Phantoms), Liberty Police, Inc. (3 Liberators), Kusari State Police (3 Wyrms), Bretonian Police Authority(3 Hussars) LFs
Possibly Corsair (1 Titan, 2 Centurions) and Order (3 Nepthys) VHFs
And though im not inclined to do it, maybe Outcast (1 Sabre, 2 Stilettos)
A few balance ideas:
*-Available only to Player Faction members at its leader's approval
*-Obtained through Admin approval of RP
*Watered down versions of the single ship equivalent.
Lower class weapons to make damage capability only Slightly higher or Equal to that of the single ship equivalent
Another few im not too certain of would be:
No Turret (if ship originally has one)
No CM
No CD (so people who choose to fight these ships have a chance to flee (everyone knows how annoying it is never being able to flee cause Someone, Somewhere, in that fight has a TCD locked on you.)
!-No Torp (last thing anyone wants to see is someone controlling the strength of 3 Mini Razors on VHFs
Notes:
* - To make sure its RP'ed (Should the idea be accepted...), those 2 limits should stay regardless
! - On skype i joked about doing this with 3-4 bombers, each capable of firing an SN ("Incoming, 4 SNs & 3 Mini-Razors + 1 TCD for cruise lockdown")
The ships listed above are just the models used and will not define the weapon class's available on the ships
One problem that might halt this, is Hitboxes.
-----If possible, through components, each ship could be made to be destroyable separately, correct?
With RP being required before being able to even use them, given the fact that 3 ships = 3 pilots, itd give people the opportunity to do the same RP seen on capital ships, except using a fighter if that is their preference.
The Police versions would probably be of more use, bringing more attention to the Police Factions of each house
Well, from your description there are several potential complications. lets start with the balance of a player flying three to five ships at once.
And then move onto hitboxing an entire static squadron, and from there I'll follow through with the issues that would related to each ship actually being part of a single object. If each ship were seen as a component however, that may be solved.
It'd more than likely be limited to three ships only.
As for balancing, that can be done both offensively and defensively rather simply by changing the available Weapon Classes and Armor.
Which leaves the main problem how hits would be registered.
Unfortunately I don't believe it would be possible to destroy any member of the wing without treating the object as a component, which in its own right presents problems.
If there were even one blind spot that could be exploited, they could destroy the entire group.
Though good idea, and i've seen this done with NPC's before on a different mod, though what you present does indeed have some complications. Though if worked out for balance, this would make quite a neat addition.

They wouldn't be able to turn on seperate plains, they would turn as one giant ship in use, and if you gave them a turn rate similar to a VHF, there would have to a be a point of turning, and the ships on the outside of the "model" would make impossible to hit odd movements.
Everything has flaws, the key issue being working with or around them if fixing them is impossible.
The only odd-movement i can see with the current model iv tried in SP has been the few seconds changing from Left to Right, or from Right to Left where the side ships make a up/down strafing movement thats only around twice as fast as normal.
Either way, it was mainly just an idea to give players that hate capital ships, but want to RP multiple people at the same time a chance to do that with fighters.
Me, I'd more than likely do it as Riku, Krusa, and Guardian.059
