Okay, when I installed 4.83, it gave me the option under "discovery server", or something like that, to set the amount of credits i start out with on the server. i set it it at 500,000,000, the logical choice. i started up the game, went to multiplayer -> discovery rp server -> new player or character, where it let me choose my name, etc, and it had 500,000 credits at the bottom. I thought great, it worked! except then when i finished w/ my new character, on the list of characters to choose from, it listed my new character BUT it said i had 8500 credits. i figured it must be just a bug. but when i played, i only had 8500 credits. can someone please tell me what the deal is here? thanks
You set the amount of credits you will get if you played Single Player. The server has the credits set to 8500 for all new players and you can't change it.
...well, those are serverside options. That's for the server computer. It only allows 8500 creds because that's an acceptable amount. With 500000 creds, everybody could just go straight to a Humpback. NOT BALANCED.

So basically, if you want those 500,000,000 credits, you have a few options:
1. Start a local server and play on that. You'll have your 500,000,000 starting credits, but probably nobody to play against.
2. Start a major faction with at least a half dozen seperate members (not sure on this; it might have been a one time deal when the player wipe occured around 4.81-4.82. Not an easy task in any case.)
3. Get out there and earn it like everyone else. Sure it will probably take quite some time, but it's doable, and you'll have a lot more fun in the process.
That 8500 can very quickly rise to millions if you know where and what afer you should go. Wrecks
I once made a completely new char and tried to expand it alone, just for the fun of seeing it grow in level. I could easily set up a dromedary only by looting the wrecks in omicrons and the systems surrounding New York. And in a dromedary, you can already do some good trade and slowly but systemmatically take up new trading ships.
However, 8500 is still imo a bit low. I'd make it enough to buy a random vanilla freighter.

Loot the wrecks in NY and you can buy a rhino for sure. Go do some Xeno/Silver mining in Colorado... a few more options there.
