Hi everybody.
I just made a Researcher character, and some things remain mysterious to me about the ID restrictions.
- It says I can only trade certain goods, but can I still carry the ones that I can't trade ? I would like to travel with Spaceship Crew and such, for RP purposes. Will I get sanctioned if I have that kind of thing on board ?
- The ID states I can't land on unlawful bases. Do the Outcast and Corsair bases count as unlawfuls ? (I know, stupid question). Because I'd like to carry Alien artifacts and Cardamine for study, but if I can't land on the planets that sells them...
- And finally, it says I can't ally with anyone. What is exactly "Allying" ? I can't group with anyone, hire anyone for protection ?
For contraband: See Junkers. And allying... I think it's meant that you can't be part of any "unofficial" faction, or claim to be part of an official one ("Hey, don't pirate me, I'm an Outcast researcher!" *cough*). It'd be right silly if a researcher could not hire a few mercs if venturing out into a dangerous area...

I still have a question though : Is it acceptable, RP-wise and Rule-wise, to role-play a Researcher who does not hesitate to smuggle illegal goods ?
For example, he could develop and create his own Counterfeit Softwares to earn his living by selling them, or the Outcasts could let him study Cardamine creation process provided he sells it in Liberty afterwards ?

But is it allowed to have an unofficial group all using researcher ID's? Because I use them for The Medics (Due to a lack of anything better)

I think that would be considered an abuse of the ID.
Just make a Junker IDed char.... or a Smuggler or Freelancer and RP him as a researcher
I love to RP a scientist, but if I can't actually earn a little money doing it I don't see the point in it.
If I take the Smuggler ID, lawfuls will start shooting at me on sight. The researcher ID clearly identifies me as a peaceful non-hostile scientist.
With the Freelancer ID pirates will just consider me as a standard trader with some fancy RP.

if you are carrying one unit of something, you are not trading in it; its an rp cargo.
you can ally, but only with other researchers; i.e. a friend can have a combat vessel, and you can have the research vessel. you can hire mercenaries and freelancers, even the damn navy as escorts, but your not allowed to group with, say, the mandalorians and start pewpewing someone.
you cannot LAND on unlawful bases. it doesnt say that you cannot ask a friendly corsair to shuttle some up from the surface.
if you want to rp the effects of cardamine, have a bunch of crew (theres naff all profit in crew, so your not really trading in them) and then you can have a bunch of cardi; you are transporting manhattenians to (base) so that they can begin the process of 'cold turkey'. of course, you dispose of the cardimine in the proper way once on the planet...
