I'm new to multiplayer Freelancer so this may be a dumb question but I noticed that when you select a player ship in the game, the name displayed on your HUD just above the selection rectangle adds a faction prefix to the player name. For example, a player called "Dude" may be displayed as "Police - Dude" when you select him. This also happens with NPC ships but they work slightly different - for example, you may see "Bounty Hunters - Piranha" on your radar and then "Bounty Hunters - Rookie Branda Shami" on screen after you select that BH ship.
Well my question is, how is the prefix faction determined for player characters? (I can tell that it's not based on ID nor on ship type - maybe it's the faction with which you have the best reputation?) Another questions perhaps to mod developers, is it possible to change this on-screen display name somehow?

Yes,it's the faction with which you have the best rep.And it's called "tag".Check your rep status,if the last faction is bleeping, that's the one displayed in front of your name.It is up to everyone to choose their tags by getting best rep with the prefered faction.
Thanks, that's what I was thinking, although I never noticed the flashing before.
Now I tried to lower my reputation with Liberty Police, Inc. so that Universal Shipping gets to the bottom of the list -- I rejected a couple of LPI missions and now my reputation with LPI is somewhat worse than with Universal but LPI is still at the bottom of the list and flashing! So strange, I always thought the factions are sorted by rep but LPI seems to be disobeying this rule and won't move up the list, I even tried restarting the game.

Just hope you dont get an issue like I did. I managed to get Synth foods as my Faction... it was hard to get rid of em.. considering they dont have any bases/offer any jobs anywhere... and their ships are rare...
Iâll carry this flag
To the grave if I must
Because itâs flag that I love
And a flag that I trust
Thanks for the warning mb52, I'll pretend I'm a Mexican next time one of those pesky paste distributors tries to draw me into a "friedly conversation". Now I know what they're up to -- trying to corrupt my player tag!:D
So anyway, I didn't even have to go white with LPI before Liberty Navy took their flashy place on my rep list. Then I rejected only about two or three Navy missions and Universal finally sunk to the bottom of the list so now I'm all corporate, yay! Pretty weird how the tag system works though, you never know how much you'll have to lower you reputation before the tag changes.
Is it against the rules to fly without one of thhose "tags?" In other words, to have reps that are Red and Green according to your RP but without one flashing and without an NPC affiliation tag showing up when you are targeted?
