I just recently saw freelancer for the first time on the shelf and bought it, its an amazing game but i can't get multiplayer working. in normal or with discovery mod, i host the server on my pc or another pc i have and try to connect via lan or internet, the IP address listing on the server list is a MAC address i believe and when i try to connect it just says this operation is taking longer than expected .. forever. if i constantly refresh the list, eventually the MAC address will change to the actual lan IP address. then the server allows me to connect to it fine. once in the server though, it seems to change back to the mac address that i can't connect to because i get disconnected. I also had a second player join the server to see if he experiances the same thing and he had the same problem with the mac address but ended up getting in by constantly refreshing. after he got in it wouldn't let him undock from new york, it kept saying this operation is taking longer then expected, if anyone could PLEASE explain to me how to host a server correctly or how to fix this mac address bug or if you have any information at all i really want to play this game with all my friends !! thanks !
To play freelancer on Servers now, you have to direct connect.
For discovery do the following.
1. Download FLMM 1.3 here http://discoverygc.com/files/flmminstaller.exe
2. Install FLMM.
3. Dowload the latest mod http://discoverygc.com/files/Discovery484.zip.flmod
4. Run the mod.
5. Run FLMM and activate the mod. CLick on it so the X becomes a check mark.
6. Goto start then run
7. Type the following. Better yet cut and paste the following line "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Freelancer\EXE\Freelancer.exe" -s82.113.48.5:2302 -s81.106.177.58:61640
I am hoping you used the default options, otherwise chenge the directory accordingly.
8. Run it.
9. You will be able to see the Discovery server when you go to multiplayer options
9. RP on the server or be prepared to be sanctioned.
Err, how could you possibly get a Mac address on the Freelancer server list? I don't even think that's possible in any case.
Anyway, do what Pip said, use the link Unselie sent, both work. If you're running on Vista, checked the pinned topics in Software/Hardware to teach you what to do.

Goto lancersreactor.com download the temporary global server workaround on this site that is mentioned and see if that helps. It helps me so I don't have to type the ip address manually or use the shortcut in the mod folder . Personally i like the workaround on the reactor temp site. I have not checked if they have a host yet so youll have to check. they are only hosting the most important files and such also of note you may need internet download manager it helps with downloads and interuptions and such. I hope i understand you right anyways how do you get a mac address from freelancer could try changing various setting or do a google search for answers . ask.com is also helpful
More information, I'm sure Dboy can give you....I simply dunno.

I need to connect to a lan server not the discovery global server. i have about 60 friends and we all want to play together

That site only has 2 downloads listed anywhere i can find and they are singleplayer shippacks
Also i have a simple question if you could answer: how do you form a group once in game? i couldn't figure it out, unless it involves leaving the first station/base b/c noone could but me for some reason
i even tried just hosting/joining the normal game 1.0
as you can see here i have a server up on 2 diff pc's 1 with discovery mod and 1 with normal game
View attachment and notice the mac addresses.. and if not mac addresses, weird numbers?
if you set up your own server, change the IP value after the -s to that server. ask all your buddies to do so.
They all ill find your server in LAN.
Doing the above set of inxtructions will also find discovery server on LAN side
Make sure you set your firewall to allow your firends.
