Here is the deal. Real pirates would most probably pirate for cargo. Taxing is not really pirating, it's taxing.
Pirating is robbing them, taking all that you can take from them. And that's cargo.
So, I was thinking about a ship that would be like a mixed gunboat and transport.
For example, it would have 3-4k cargo, 3-4 gunboat turrets, 3-4 regular turrets, CD (must have it), Transport shield.
Size bigger then a gunboat, maybe Container Transport size?
It could be used for real pirating with no need for a group.
Also, it should never be able to take on a gunboat, if pilot skills are even. It should be weaker, so stats are to be discussed.
Of course, it would have to be forbidden by rules to mount a Trader/Smuggler ID on this ship.
It should never be used for Smuggling/Trading, only Pirating.
Pirate could demand Cargo then, example, 30-50%, and earn more then by taxing.
Now, even if you kill a Trader you get nothing because you can't possibly pick up that cargo.
It can be done now, of course, but you need at least 2 people, 1 in an attack vessel, and another in a Transport vessel.
And it doesn't pay of for two people. But even that is much more in RP then simply taxing.
Nah, just a rough idea, enough to be discussed.
Thoughts?

I kind of see what your getting at. Make an entirely new class of ship, that can only be used for pirating, and not usable in Fleet actions? I agree with this, but it has to be fleshed out a bit more before It can be decided and confirmed upon.
hmm.. of course a pirate can pirate in a container transport.
in the classic understanding, pirate ships are similar to any other ship. - maybe a little faster, but since we do not have different speeds..... . - besides, a containertransport can wipe the floor with pretty much any other transport ship - and its big enough to place itself before hte other ship - so the other ship cannot just charge away.
hm.. anyone ever tried to pirate in a containertransport?
This is would require a lot of balancing if it were to be actually used by some people. I tried doing this a long time ago in my old trader, which I used to pirate people with. It was a Transport.
The thing is, this kind of pirating needs to be made profitable, without imbalancing trade routes.

I don't know if a Container Transport has a CD.. I highly doubt it.
I actually don't know of any Transport that has a CD..
So, how can i Pirate in it?

there we go - perfect ship to pirate for goods in. - and as far as i remember, the pirate transport is quite agile, too - compared to the other trnasport monsters.
The problem is where to sell the goods, once you've got them...
The majority of the legal goods aren't that profitable on pirate bases and you can't dock on lawful ones.
But the Raven, sitting lonely on that placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered; not a feather then he fluttered--
Till I scarcely more than muttered, "Other friends have flown before--
On the morrow he will leave me, as my Hopes have flown before."
<blockquote>Then the bird said, "Nevermore."</blockquote>

Yes, that sounds a lot better then a Liner. I'd never pirate in a Liner.
It maybe is practical, but is most certainly out of RP for my standards.
I will try to pirate in a Pirate Transport then, that might work out fine.
@Nevermoore - For example, Cardamine can be sold both on Manhatan and Rochester.
You can always find an unlawful allied base close enough, and sell it for a good price.
Of course, you would need to pick systems for Pirating carefully, but that's what makes it interesting.
And after all, it isn't all about profit, really. At least not to me.
I spend like 5 million credits a week max.
