Tl;DR: If an object/player passes another one while docked on a trade lane, one of the parties will be destroyed by FLhook.
How to reproduce: start object from beginning of a given trade lane. Have the second one dock with the lane later on such that they will collide while docked in the trade lane. One of the parties will gradually become damaged, then explode
Has happened to me twice. the first time an npcs convoy substantially damaged me while i was flying to lancaster, I undocked before FLhook removed all my HP
some IMG chap got blown to shreds the moment I passed through him in the trade line jump.
Happens pretty often, once entered a trade lane between WP and Manhattan while a cardimine smuggler was using the lane, he ended up rearending me and died. T'was actually hilarious.
EDIT: To be honest though, this is a good feature.
INRP reason for my character to talk about how unreliable trade lanes are... I think it cannot be fixed due to even minimal damage you receive upon ramming other object which exagarrates to force enough to instakill for ships moving on a defined rail with extra ordinary speed.
You normally can survive if you have: armor, press ESC fast enough, regen... or... don't fly recklessly.:) "500 m safety distance" they told you in flight school, didn't they?:D
