Schatten Research Facility was constructed some time during the year 797 A.S., but beyond that, not much is known. The station was heavily damaged during the Nomad War, and subsequently lay abandoned for several years. The Rheinland Military eventually salvaged a number of relatively intact components, recombining them into a single structure, much smaller then the original station.

The classified nature of the base has given rise to extensive speculation to what is going on at Schatten. Cybernetic implantations, genetic mutation projects, even a new Nomad infestation is commonly whispered when speaking of the base. The truth may be less spectacular however. The two large spaceframes made the Schatten facility an ideal and secure place to start experimenting with new ship designs. The "Elbe" class carrier is known to have been fieldtested in Frankfurt, which suggests that the prototype ship was originally designed - and built - at Schatten.

Battleship Koblenz has been stationed near the base to protect it from infiltration attempts. However, the massive minefield around the base - a remnant of the Nomad War that Rheinland is in no hurry to dismantle - makes it very hard to approach. The only major gap in the field is guarded by the Koblenz.
