"0 programming knowledge" requirement elevates it from "small template edit" to "plugin dev, maintenance and setup" imho. I would go with one variable with date that is counted to and second variable being url to event announcement + edit in template via admin panel to change those.

Don't click on the countdown..? And if you do, there's this Back button (even on mobile devices) that will take you straight back to the forum page you were on.
