I'm sure it's *possible* to modify Freelancer in some way to make some of this stuff possible...is it worth it?
It'd be better if the mod/server updated weekly (With very small changes) and people download the new updates. With any luck, the people with slow connections could download changed files only.

It would be a mess and many people would end up with missupdated versions... hence connecting and crashing the server, corrupting player files, etc. So the small patch system is discarded.
It is not possible to implement without having to re-download the whole mod. And that would create a version hell, a lot of work for the modders, and a nightmare for the players at the time of playing.
And it's not possible to automatize it (like making buyable bases at stations so the player can buy and position the station) as the game engine does not supports it.

Better? Yes. Time consuming, detrimental to the creator (i.e. Igiss) and quality of the mod (i.e. Discovery)? Also yes.
If you'd care to volunteer to do the work, then it'll be updated weekly.

I doubt that FL2 will come out. For a few reasons.
1)Digital Anvil collapsed.
2)As the maker of FL is gone, Openlancer will probably be the next best thing, therefore, Microsoft doesn't want to make another one.
3)The FL community is small. It would cost more to make another game, and the best time would've been a few years ago. FL has been out 5 years, they would've made another one before now.
