Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Barrier - 09-28-2009 ' Wrote:One of things I've run into (not here) but it was awesome topic. In all seriousness, Hessians are not all that "bad". I was hunting Unioners, and they let me go after I ejected their fellow Unioner pilots. The point is that this thread probably won't apply in most cases, which is probably to the good. Still, people can still RP extremely unhappy Hessians when they've got an extremely sad story behind them, and not just "for kicks". Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Dab - 09-28-2009 As my GC is my most-often used pirate char, I'll use Kusari as my example.. When I see Kishiro, I'm much more likely to let him off with a 1-2 million tax. I'll be decently polite, I won't threaten to kill his family and burn him alive if he doesn't pay me.. GMG I don't pirate period. Of course, I'll pretend to be pirating him if KNF/Hogosha/FA/KSP show up, then 'abandon the piracy' due to the presence of hostiles, but I won't actually take any of his cargo (unless I find more of them with wine, then I'll take a few units of it. >.>) or tax him. Samura is the polar opposite of that.. If I see Samura, it's going down. It's dropping that cargo and paying me some money before he gets away with his life. And he's only getting one chance, he tries to run and boom. (Unless his cargo is really really profitable for a nearby friendly transport to pick up, like Gold.) But that's because he's Samura and I'm GC. They are the reason we're oppressed. My character doesn't give a crap if he gets fired, or if he dies. Heck, she'd pull the trigger on him herself if she had the opportunity. I wouldn't even demand something from Samura if rules didn't make me.. They are our arch enemies, we would normally just destroy every Samura transport we come across. Foreign traders I'm ambivalent towards. I'll take money or cargo, threaten them if they don't comply, and blow them up if they try to run away over and over. When it comes to fairness.. Honestly, how fair should I be when the trader flies right to me? A proper trader has an escort scouting ahead of him, warning him if pirates are on their route. Those who recognize tags can see us in the system via chat window. A proper trader will try to get around us, not fly right at us.. And those who do get caught. A proper roleplayer will try to talk his way out of the situation, or stall us long enough for the lawfuls to arrive and try to save him. Maybe negotiate a smaller tax or a portion of the cargo instead of a large amount or all of the cargo. Those who get caught and then engage cruise engines over and over, not saying a word in chat.. Well, I'm not going to be fair to them. They show they aren't willing to RP, so I'm not willing to be fair. You want me to be fair, roleplay with me if I catch you. Heck, just insulting me (in-RP), or spouting off a few lines while trying to run is enough.. But sitting silent and tapping the cruise button will only make it worse for you. Note: Farmers Alliance isn't a governmental/political terrorist group. They are extremists towards foreign trade, yes. But they are actually neutral (under the table, publicly hostile) to the Kusari Government and Samura. The terrorist groups of Kusari are the GC and BD. Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Weedalot - 09-28-2009 well i avoided reading most of it.. and i am sorry if i missed something. But i can tell you what happened to me. I had a very nice RP with someone i believed to be a good RP player (Trader) He called for a GB backup and insulted the corsairs. (I do not recall if i demanded anything or not, but later when he were whining in PM's and rule lawyering me i told him "I do not have to demand") Now he submitted it and i got sanctioned.. there was like 5 min RP.. he called for someone to kill me and he was very insulting to the corsairs.. After i got my sanction i talked to virus and he told me "You must demand" So to answer your questions.. There are some asses that will do anything to sanction you because they lost 300k worth of cargo. You just demand all their cargo and credits for their foul mouth, or for their RP.. if i am a civilian.. or a company employee and you about to get mugged, you dont start telling the criminal his hair look bad.. or "you mamma so fat.. so fat that.." no you dont do it.. you prey for your life. so all those who think RPing brave traders who will bad mouth you is just poor RP in my point of view.. when you are getting mugged you need to play as someone his life is in danger. Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Slainte - 09-28-2009 Nice post Ivan, very interesting. Lets hope it doesnt turn out to be one of these pirate versus trader threads. As for " rp versus fairplay " where could you draw the line? In my Gateway trader ive been pirated in rp, out of rp and in fairness and ive found a very thin line between them all. None of which ive bitched about because thats life :D If a Hessian stopped me and rp'ed that im helping to kill his people etc, and rp'ed it well, then blew me out of the sky alls well, ill know not to try and get caught by these lads again  Lessons can be learned in all situations methinks. And if youve been reading up on the forums then any situation can be prepared for in getting stopped by any unlawfulls. Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Quorg - 09-28-2009 I have no sympathy for traders who are forced to jettison all cargo. My smuggler characters are told to do it all the time. But to refer to some of the other posts in this thread- be careful what you call "abuse" and "OORP"... you can play a stupidly brave and sharp-tongued trader, you can play a trader who's too greedy or reckless to hire an escort, you can play a trader who would rather fight back using his transport guns than take the extra ten minutes to fly around the system to avoid you. Decide your own RP, and let others decide theirs. Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Exsiled_one - 09-28-2009 Basically most of people see eye to eye. Rp should be met with RP. I'm slowly trying to push out that fact that there's alot of unlawful that aren't really pirates. Liberty Rogues could be described as pirates. Gaians, not really. Most groups have some agenda that does not revolve around money only, but it focuses on pushing their goals forward. It is important to uphold those goals if you're already playing a member of the faction. I know that RHA doesn't pirate as much, or destroy cargo, at least not in significant numbers. as much as i'ld like to see police and mercenarys, i'ld love to see more organized unlawful factions. Roleplay versus Fairness to others - VenomHX - 09-28-2009 Fairness vs Roleplay. Fairness is already bought into this mod, it's called rules you have to follow else you get sanctioned or you get banned for not playing by these rules. All you have to do is play your part. Whether people actually play it correctly is another story altogether and wish people would be more hardcore with playing their said roles. The world is not a pretty place. It's not safe and it's by no means law abiding all of the time. In the future I am completely sure space will be no different. We are talking about Freelancer anyway. There are pirates, terrorists, revolutionaries, and more. If you don't feel safe, you need to hire yourself an escort or you need to join up with a group that you can feel safe with. No one can hear you scream in space. Almost all of my pirate characters will have some certain group they will force to drop all their cargo and/or pay an extortionate fine in order to live. And if an Outcast catches my Cryer trader, I'm expecting the same treatment. The problem is, as you say, pushing people away from corporate trading. But rather than going soft on people because they're carrying the torch of corp business, you should be brutal, but they need to have the chance to be brutal back. My dear Cryer for example, have a pretty sweet deal with the cardamine-demanding thing. Outcasts can hit us hard, but we can hit back just as hard. It's a shame it isn't this way for all the corporations. Being ruthlessly pirated because you're synth foods can make you sad. I guess having someone go easy on you might be a little better. But I know that if I was Synth Foods, the thing that would get me logging in is the opportunity to crush the feeble rebels trying to resist the irrepressible spread of my corporate empire. Conflict causes activity. One-sided conflict makes people frustrated and stop playing. But if the corps got an even hand, I think activity would boost a lot for them. I know my Cryer boys are more interested (gameplay-wise) in the cardamine-jacking part of cryer than the trading part. Both are legitimate facets of Cryer Pharms RP and I think some other corporations need a little more fleshing out too. So yeah uh basically, if it's all balanced, then get roleplay in over fairplay any day. also lol corp rant 200425 Roleplay versus Fairness to others - Rudo - 09-28-2009 It's a balance. On one hand, you need that hard risk involved with the pirate who is ideologically opposed to your activities and your company. I've always wanted to play a Daumann or a BMM for that reason. On the other hand, fairplay and a possibility of different outcomes make it much less of a railroaded event where there's only two possible outcomes. That makes it entertaining for everyone involved as opposed to the "THIS IS WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE" attitude that so many use as an excuse to only fight with overwhelming force or try to crush a character out of existence entirely. Pardon the tangent, I just hate that attitude. Sure, if you're a Hessian hitting a Daumann, threaten to crush him like an insect. But there's got to be a way out, some doorway through the brick wall. Otherwise it's just a brick wall, and that's no fun. |
