I'd say three million is around the top I'll demand from a normal trader (ie standard goods). I tend to stick around the 1 to 2 million mark though, or less if the trader is empty, or if my mark is a fighter or transport pilot.

If you're hauling ore, you'd better have an escort with you, 'cos I'll be taking you for quite a lot, although I'm usually pretty fair. I'll either take a chunk of money and a smallish amount of ore, or I'll ask for a percentage of your cargo. Either way, it'll probably be a fair way above the 3 million mark, cos lets face it, that ore sells for 11k to 16k per unit.

stop whining, buy armor, give up your 5k for something that can dodge or has tons of turrets:D

if it's a faction that hates me, then i expect to be destroyed, have all of my cargo stolen or raped for 50mil. otherwise, i wouldnt pay over 3mil, i hardly ever trade on my own, so if you're not going to accept 6 mil from me and whoever i'm convoying with then BL, you get 12 turrets shooting at you and a hefty repair bill for being greedy.

<strike>Ooh look another whine thread about pirates!

</strike>I will not pay anything over 2 million, some pirates just don't have common sense. I got pirated for 2 million in a Hawk before.

Word of advice: Don't pay them, if you do you'll only encourage them to come back for more.

Or give them the PvP fix they're after.

I usually try to aim for pirating about 40% of what a trader would make on a run, which in my trading experience is a bit more than 1000 per unit for a shortish inter-house journey. This usually equates to 100-200k for a freighter, up to the full 2 million for a 5k transport. If you're carrying certain types of cargo, then my pirate will let you off for a small amount of the cargo (usually 20 units maximum). If people lolpirate you, I find that the best way to deal with it is to pay them (or die, your choice) then tip off the house lawfuls/bounty hunters/mercenaries and wait for the little blue (or red) message saying that they've been put out of action.

In my very short career on discovery just got pirated once: I was mining helium in a 2k freighter and got asked for 1M. If I remember right it was an outcast id but some neutral iff in a bomber... talked the guy down to 700k, still worth more than half my cargo (550 per unit at my point of sale)...
as i was in a 10M ship and had a bit of cash it was ok.

I feel pirates shouldn't ask for more than part of the profit, else they would drive (ipr: the trader out of business or (oorp: the player away from the game.

oh, and pirates should use hostile iff. just like the npc pirates they shouldn't be able to dock everywhere or be spared by npc police/military.

just my opinion

The pirates OP mentions were actually sanctioned for other offences. They were indeed not the best example on how to roleplay a piracy situation. I guess you should let yourself get pirated by someone else. (Hint: callsigns in all-capital letters are probably not what you are looking for).

As for appropriate demands - I think the top is roughly the maximum value of the commodities you're carrying, plus minus a million for larger and hundreds of thousands for smaller ships. Just a basic rule of thumb, there's a ton of exceptions.

They can't. They don't.
