Police, smuggling and alike - Mere_Mortal - 07-22-2008 A few units of illegal items isn't really an issue. I personally ignore them, but you gotta remember that it's against the law so don't complain if you are told to drop them, although I do sympathise if you're blown to bits in such a scenario. As for RP, why would any law abiding citizen or law enforcer bother talking to a criminal? If they're actively murdering people or smuggling Slaves and Cardamine...they deserve to be shot with no prior warning. That's how I play it and I reserve no regrets for doing so. If I encounter pirates holding up a lane, I'm not going to waste my time on the comms, I'll be ready to fire my weapons without giving them a chance to either return the favour or flee for their lives. I have even hired a mercenary to assist me in destroying two pirates trains with a full load of Cardamine, whilst another got away. There was no warning, they were ambushed on a lane and terminated there & then. Why? Because such a smuggling operation is a massive threat to Sirius, it results in a vicious cycle. Therefore, any talking should be limited to diplomatic measures between the relevant houses. Police, smuggling and alike - sovereign - 07-22-2008 The LPI are working to be more corrupt, while there is a ban on Rheinland vehicles I have on multiple occasions PM'd or local chatted at someone and said "Mighty fine cruiser over at Fort Bush, would hate for it to rough up your ship. 100k says it stays there and I forget I saw you." Also works with small amounts of contraband, and if it isn't drugs I'll take a slight cut of the product and a small bribe rather than calling you out. Works better than saying "drop it all and pay 2 mil" and feels better than blasting them. Especially when you don't actually have the firepower to blast them and would need to ask a larger vessel (like the aforementioned cruiser) to do so. On my RM a few days back I noticed a Luxury Liner with about 2000 passengers, 50 slaves, and a bunch of various random things a liner would need. I stopped him for a more detailed scan, determined nothing really hazardous (how do you recognize small amounts of slaves from regular people, anyway?) and let him move along. Shot him a PM saying "//thank you for smuggling properly, please come again". On occasion I've had to call jurisdiction when a random person calls out contraband in such cases, and told them their scanners must be malfunctioning. If they persist in trying to ruin a good attempt at roleplay, they get shot for insubordination. Hmm, maybe I should make Zapp give a formal LPI decree that as the police authority of Liberty, the LPI's word on law-breaking is the top word, trumping everything others say on the matter. Might let us be good role-models for how to deal with good smugglers. Police, smuggling and alike - Radman89 - 07-22-2008 Well it is RM,LPI or any other lawful faction to do their jobs and scan everyone for contraband so even if someone has 1 unit of Cardamine he or she should drop it to comply with the RP and avoid being sanctioned Police, smuggling and alike - sovereign - 07-22-2008 ' Wrote:Well it is RM,LPI or any other lawful faction to do their jobs and scan everyone for contraband so even if someone has 1 unit of Cardamine he or she should drop it to comply with the RP and avoid being sanctioned How exactly do you pick out a single unit of cardamine or synth marijuana from 4999 units of various pharmaceuticals? The whole point is that if there is Contraband mixed in with many different commodities the police should have no way to know in RP. For eaxmple You are flying a Lux Liner carrying passangers, lux food, lux consumer goods, a few slaves and some synth Mari. Now, if the police scan and see the Mari and slaves. 1. in rp how can the police differentiate the slaves from the passangers? 2. how can the police hold the liner captain liable for the passengers carrying illegal contraband (marijuana) SO as you can see in this example he is complying with RP, and if the police continue to hassle the player they are the ones not going along with the RP of the situation. The Rp is there you just have to see it and play along. Police, smuggling and alike - Jaysom_Blackfist - 07-23-2008 Thats the problem that is corrupting the House polices and navys of Discovery they they dont care about RP all they see is a chace to PVP or get money thats all they care about. Call me crazy but you would think that the house police and navy would be bigger RP'rs then anyone else because they do more things with people. Police, smuggling and alike - Zero755 - 07-23-2008 All I ever see out of the Police/Military with the exception of the RM, is people looking for a chance to PvPWhore and prove how 133T they think they are. It is getting to the point that I dont even come to NY anymore except when I start a new Character. And a further testiment to the OORPness or the refusal to RP is easy, log on, go to NY and just watch the chat. "Stop or die!" "But sir I am just..." "OMG noob die" There is a complete lack of RP in NY, it is true that the new players spaen there, but that is no excuse for the sheer amount of OORP chat and actions taken but the police. And the sad thing is: the LPI/LN/LSF/SA have all been called out at one point or another with just complaints of OORP behavior. And it is by allowing this behavior to continue that breeds more of that behavior. Noobs see the 'power' that the LPI/LN/LSF/SA have and they then aspire to that power without learning a bit of RP behavior. I believe the faction leaders are trying to do something, but I think they need to thin their ranks. Weed out those that cant RP properly. Help teach them if necessary but something should be done. This is exactly what I am trying to say I Have a Liberty Rogue and a NovaPG I try and try to RP but all I get is them doing stuff like that left and right. Its getting so bad that I dont even know if this is a RP server anymore some times. Example my Liberty Rogue was just shot down in the attempt to help a Outcast buddy out I was talking to him in system chat them whole time he was RPing with them say stuff like "you cant even take out a little fighter like this" and stuff like that you trying to generate RP when I got there I found 3 people attacking him. 1 Navy 1 LSF and 1 interspace(I dont know how they got invovled). I ran the interpace off and then there was two left the whole fight I didnt hear a word of RP from anyone. even after the fight i still never head a peep of RP not even some thing as simple as "Pirates destroyed ok traders its safe to start flying again." I mean come on is it too much to ask for the Police/Navy/Mercs/or BHG member to say something even after we are dead? I can see why the BHG members wouldnt say anything until we are right in their sights and we cant get away, but as soon as we are they cant the disrupt us to death and then RP saying something as simple as there is a bounty for *blah* come in with me or be taken by force. Police, smuggling and alike - Zero755 - 07-23-2008 And the sad thing is, it will never change. As long as the LPI/LN/LSF/SA get to flaunt their 'Power' (ability to PvPwhore everything in sight without out so much as a hint of RP) around without consequence other noobs will be drawn to that 'power' and the involved factions pretty much hand out membership. It is kind of like the problem that everyone seems to have with the irresponsible Indy capship pilots NOTICE I do not intend to turn this into an Indy vs Faction arguement Again anyway back to the point people that act like pwnzors with no rp will attract other wannabe pwnzors and we dont need that. We need for the LPI/LN/LSF/SA to learn how to RP. Police, smuggling and alike - Mere_Mortal - 07-23-2008 Canasius, you're overlooking something about that incident, if it's the one I'm thinking of...I for one was ordered to stand back as there were already enough forces to deal with the pirate. I will also stress my opinion again that a few RP words are far less important than getting the job done. Afterwards, yes it is nice to make a few comments, particular given that the loser has survived (as they always do). But on engaging, it wastes time. After some time and practice, some can chat and fight appropriately, but I'm still getting to grips with that and would much rather do the job. Some people seem to be getting confused about what "role-play" is actually about. It's not about chatting, it's about performing the assumed role. A Police or Naval Officer will not chat with a criminal, they will deal with them according to their operational parameters. In Freelancer, the role-play is about being a pirate and stealing, being a terrorist and murdering, being a Hunter and seeking a pay cheque, being a smuggler or just simply wandering the stars in pursuit of commerce or leisure. These are the foremost aspects of the role-play environment. Chatting with your foe is illogical and potentially dangerous if you should instead be readying your weapons. |
