' Wrote:I really would like to know a few things referring to what you can see in this screen. 3dsmax seems to seperate the model visually. Now why is that and how can I avoid it in the future?

Even when rendered it stings out quit a bit, but would something like this have a effect on a model ingame? If someone please could elaborate further on this on I would be very thankful. Free cockies anyone?:P

It doesn't have any impact on a textured model.

It can actually. Unconnected verticies, even when sitting perfectly on top of each other will cause little seams in the model when flying in-game. Not noticable on a stationary object, but when it's a player ship moving you can definitely see it. Light can even be seen through some of the seams.

The best way that I know to look for these problems is to check for faces that are connected to more than 4 verticies. This is almost a surefire way to find unconnected verticies.

Now how could you see that? Would be nice if you could elobarate further on that one.
I can see it because I trained my eye to spot it. I'm pedantic when it comes to making my models. xD
Like I said above, the easiest way to see it is when a single face is connected to more than 4 verticies. That's usually a sign that they are not connected, even if they are places squarely on top of another verticie or edge.

The area circled in blue is what caught my attention, and needs the most work. The areas circled in green may also have the same problems, but I can't tell from the picture alone.

I was under the impression that he was talking about 3ds max smoothing parts of the mesh(happens when extruding). That's what I was talking about.

Well thanks for the replies guys. I guess its all about getting more practice anyway. If I should have further questions maybe I could come back to you both via pms? If that would be ok with you two.

I am going to hijack my own thread here and hopefully I won't get offened by doing so. No. Good.

Since I am pretty new at modeling I have decided that I could need some more practice and I'll also have to learn texturing at some point. Therefor I modeled this light fighter since texturing a smaller ship to get started should be a good idea.

A "new age" civilian light fighter. Just wanted some impressions on its current look. The polycount is roughly 2000. Shoot away.

Now, could someone be so nice and point me to where I can find all the textures used in Discovery?

Here is the nearly finished mesh. I added a little more detail and did some cleaning. The polycount is 1694. Texturing sure as hell is time consuming and I will need more time getting to know all the "how-to's". Well, if anyone has the spare time and would be interessted in texturing this model than contact me via pm.

Your newly started thread-in-thread topic image looks cute :ylove: Like if a Corsair Titan and a Civilian Starflier had a baby:DWould be a nice replacement for the Civilian Shuttle!

Also, you can lower the polycount even more if you remove the "engine nozzle" and replace it with a standard engine grill texture.;)
