Insurance.
Imma just saying.
In-sur-ance.

That.

Seriously, it takes a LONG time to get the credits together to buy certain classes of ships.

If you actually LOST the ship you have when you died, you would be scared to take it out.

It took me a couple of weeks of pretty much nothing but trading to gather the credits for a Barge, which I didn't end up getting anyway.

I really seriously would not want to go through that again any time soon.

Also, I love the look of EVE, but the old 'ship loss on death' put paid to me even thinking about playing it.

No faction could make a profit from this. The losses are staggeringly great, and the amount of credits you would make from selling insurance would come no-where close to breaking even.

Voted an obvious no, even if there was a short test period the Q_Q would be too enormous to bear.

This would be final nail in the Discovery coffin. within 24 hours 50% of server would ragequit, and other 50% would be base camping.
Do what other servers do. You die? you loose 10% of creds on that char.(that includes all cargo's worth to).

I think you would need to start a new server for this.

Edit: It's not a bad idea, but it has little to no chances of success in a place as established (full of people who prefer simple entertainment). I would be interested in trying it out. But I'm afraid that will not happen until this goes beyond ideas & suggestions and someone puts effort into proving the concept by setting up a server for it. So if you think it's a really good idea, go ahead with it, and don't let anyone here hold you back.

Edit #2: The severity of the death penalty could be controlled by returning the resale value of the ship & equipment to the player. Which could be tweaked further.

If there were an option to "Repair ship" and bring it back with the exact same setup, on a low price, let say 1 mil for fighters,3 mil bombers ,6 mil gunboat..and so on...then won't sound that bad.

Interesting idea ...

I've written down an argument against it somewhere during a loooong <strike>smuggling</strike> trading run ... damn ... where is it again? ...

Ah!
Now ... follow me carefully ...

Quote:if RP -> Death = death
!! -> equipment should reflect that

--> current equipment NOT made for RP fights

--> combat in Discovery =/= RP situation

--> combat = combat NOT treated as 'real' RP
Looks way better on the paper I have in front of me ... but the argument is quite logical.

IF your idea gets implemented (on whateverserver 24/7), the equipment has to be realistic as well.
Means
  • every ship should get EVERY possible system (guns, turrets, mines, CDs, CMs, power cores, scanners, armour upgrades, shields, nanobots, shield batteries, thrusters ...) to defend itself against the ultimate death.
  • ship design (placement of hardpoints) would take way longer due to balancing issues
  • special code to enhance survivability (emergency call buttons to request immediate help by friendly forces ...)
  • ... and other things I cannot think of so early in the morning :D
This idea requires, as said some posts earlier, a special Freelancer Hardcore RP server. There are always people who'd try it, of course, but don't expect to get a constantly filled server ever;)

If such server existed ... well ... I don't know if I would go for it but I certainly don't want to have some lolwut lunatic shooting me in the Discovery 24/7 server universe, just because he has fun destroying other players' ships.

So I voted no.
But you can still RP a really killable human being here. I did it with my renegade RM character. Didn't last long though because I decided to not revive him ^^
