That's actually a very interesting point there Kurosaki. Elgato also has a good one too.

I thank you all for your input.

I'm going to vote limited as well, and completely agree with Kurosaki. If the pirate capital ships cannot scan or demand anything, neither should the lawful capital ships be able to as well -- not really fair when you've got someone in a fully kitted battleship pointing all of his turrets at you asking for all those goods you smuggled in.

Perhaps people should not be looking for a way in which to limit the lawful military establishments, and instead be looking at the current state of affairs and how any such alterations would affect game play and balance. Adversely or otherwise.

meh, military scanning always seemed weird.
And if scan was allowed only to police, would make people interested into creating police faction. Not sure if its a good or bad thing.

Im sort of in two 1/2's with this one i understand what you are saying but...

I would say if a Navy Fighter is passing by and sees a small trader looking a bit shifty. Scan thier cargo and see whats going on there. However if its one of the big ships they should only be allowed to scan in a clearcut military zone e.g. if they are going to dock with a Battleship (as the pilot would defend the Battleship at all costs).

Also i think Military should have full rights in border systems. e.g. Magellan. As the Military would be called upon there to uphold the law.

However the little Police chars should do most of the leg work.

Personally on my Military char i only scan when there is no Police available. Or the trader in question is close to a base of important military significance.

I think a battleship should be able to stop you but not scan you. Maybe don;'t allow battleships to have scanning at all? Anyways it should be able to stop you if it thinks you are really dodgy. But only if there is a fighter patrol online and nearby

I would like to point out to all the people styating that real world Militaries do not stop contraband smuggling, you're wrong. The Royal Navy routinely searches suspect vessels in British waters. They are a part of our attempts to limit smuggling in and around the British Isles. For this reason I do not believe the Miltary ID should be limited, however I do think it is up to the Military character to leave the job to the relevant police if s/he's in a House system with police present.

Just reduce the scan range of the Battleship License if you dont want Battleships scanning people... I mean even a big a** Train can get away from a Battleship...
