' Wrote:It seems odd that some of the more desperate factions like the Corsairs are able to have capital ships when they could better invest their money in building transports for artifact smuggling or buying more food.

A note,

Maybe they already did? Maybe they already have had so many transports and smuggled enough to make cash to be used in making shipyards? It doesn't always take multiple planets to have enough resources to build ships. A single planet is enough, more than enough.

Ships don't need food to be operated. Or even built, considering that must of it is automatic, not as many human bodies needed to have everything work. The Corsairs are on a food -shortage-, which doesn't mean they're out of food. They probably have more than enough to properly feed important people.

And no, it doesn't matter how much money the Corsairs might have, they'll always lack the food, they simply don't have it. Other than pirating, the only other way of food is brought by zoners or random freelancers/traders. They can't really open trade relations with anyone, due to enemies surrounding them.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure the Corsairs already did that stuff you mentioned, been years you know.

Hmm perhaps the Zoners shouldn't have capital ships - or in the least caps without guns. That would counter some of their "bravado" and force them to act out neutrality in-RP.

All fun and games aside (although I do mean what I just said to some extent), I think caps are fine, as they are so useless and attract gank-mobs from all over to take a shot.

My only comment here is on two factions:

1)the Corsairs, the reason they have the ossies at least was the alliance with the Order

this leads into two

2)In my opinion, and possibly ( I hope) supported by the Lore, while the ORder may be small, it does have sympathizers all over the place, it's not inconcievable that they could raise enough capital and resources to maintain a fleet of arge warships, limited albeit, but still, they could probably have more resources than you could shake a stick at

Disclaimer: The above is purely an opinion

I believe that cap ships brings a lovely dimension to the game, but as in the old earth if a war cap ship wonders into some other countries (space region'€™s) borders without requesting a pass it is a act of war. So I like the arrangement where cap ships are limited to their own borders or no-man lands.

Regarding the large factions like the Corcairs: the large houses are in the out-regions of space (like the drug lords of the old earth) and are difficult to control by the proper governments. Furthermore organizations like that gets allot of money for their unsocial deeds like making drugs and slavery so they can be well equipped with expensive weapons. I don'€™t see the Corcairs as a '€œterrorist organization'€; a terrorist organization cannot have cap ships because they are hidden amongst civilians (or need to infiltrate) and armies / police can easily wipe them out if they are found.

I think having an odd war between factions are good fun.

Ok, so it seems everyone's ok with at least the Corsairs and the Order (and by extension the Outcasts) having capital ships. What about other unlawful pirates? Could the Mollies and the Hessians make enough from smuggling gold and Blood Diamonds to build their capital ships? Then what about the Lane Hackers and the Blood Dragons? Where do they get their income from? And the Rogues? Do they just leech off of the Mollies? Finally, the Zoners - do they make enough money in trade to make their own capital ships?

These are genuine questions. After seeing the responses here, I want to see the community's reasoning behind how these factions can have all these capital ships.

I reckon that that: Corsairs, Order, Hessians, Outcasts are like old word rouge countries and Mollies, Blood Dragons, Hackers etc'€¦ are more terrorist groups and should only have from gunboats down, because of visibility (from government forces) and not because of income.

I can't speak for the others, but as far as I understand the Hessian diplomatics, they get support from the IMG.
And I'm sure the IMG has enough income to build these ships.

Welcome to discovery, where angry miners can build their own brand-new battleships.

Meh, IMHO the Jormungand was one of the biggest mistakes in 4.86.
But hey, Freelancer, unlawful factions got also in vanilla advantages.

Oh hello rwx.

IMG takes the Molly gold and the Hessian diamonds (not the red ones) and sells them to lawful markets. That's actually a large part of the "GDP" of those 2 unlawfuls groups. Now if we add piracy and some other sources of income for the Hessians and Mollys (they have small industries in their Guard systems - remember), they probably have the resources to build mediocre capital ships.
