Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - takemori - 04-17-2012 Narcotic, I just have to say, after reading Lee del Sol Verde's diary, I think I'm going to attempt to do something similar! I would never have done so before, but your attempt was so clever and well done that it makes me want to try it too. Heh thanks.:) Didn't thought, that people would actually read it, because my native language isn't english, which makes it all a bit difficult. I did it more for myself, to train my english skills and expand my character RP. And as long as it's fun for me writing those entries, I'll continue it. /edit: You can also leave some feedback here, if you want. And let me know about your attempts result. Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - Benjamin - 04-17-2012 Problems (for me) w/watering holes: Mechanical: the threads are for interacting. Human interaction is a constant back-and-forth of short, quick actions. Say a sentence, receive a sentence. People overlap each other when they talk. Even mid-sentence, someone's body language can make you change up. Writing up your huge paragraph and then waiting for one back doesn't work. Too stilted, too unrealistic. Bars: been touched upon. Only so much you can do in a bar. You can spout your spiel to someone, then you're pretty much out. There's nothing you can just 'be doing' except waiting for people to arrive. Especially as most of the bars seem like airport lounges, train station waiting rooms even. Just strangers passing through who need to kill time, quiet depressing little places with a trickle of souls 24/7. Hard to jump in. In your head even if not in reality. Can't just leap in. Interjecting yourself in to someone else's chat is impolite. Writing 'benjamin walks into the bar, orders a drink and looks around' is lame, and you might just get ignored anyway. Don't see why they're not whole bases. That way you can actually be getting on with stuff, your job, your life, and you can have more of an excuse/ability to write post-length posts. Would read more like a set of intertwind stories which sometimes overlap or intersect, rather than weird formal conversations which last minutes yet also weeks. Your trader is still chatting to that policewoman, even though you've done 6 trade routes through 39 systems since then. Anyway yeah that's why I stayed out of it. If someone made a thread for a base, and it was more a story of the station, written by many, re-using npcs, giving multiple perspectives and background to it, making whatever, cardiff mining facility, a living, breathing place, with characters, regular visitors, problems, quirks, plot arcs, then I'd be down with that. But I don't want to walk into a bar and sit there and wait for someone to talk at me. Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - Pancakes - 04-17-2012 Watering holes are so dead because I stopped cybering in them. The sad truth. Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - MB52 - 04-17-2012 I've been using em for a bit, usually have a character make an appearance here and there. Often I use it to show something else thats happening in a story arc.. for example, I've had my main visit the bar on planet ackbar ( or whatever its actually called:P) and each post I've tried to show her mental stability decrease more and more. Till finally... boom... Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - takemori - 04-17-2012 I think it would be amazing if Discovery could add the watering holes to the stations. Not sure how they would add them, maybe putting recent ones (within the last month, or less for more popular watering holes) in the Rumors/News section at the bar? To me, going to a station and reading these would help me feel more immersed and helps me understand the other people rping in the game. Even better when I'm flying around and I see one of the people I heard about in the watering hole!! It would make the universe feel more alive to me:D Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - Jeremy Hunter - 04-17-2012 ' Wrote:I think it would be amazing if Discovery could add the watering holes to the stations. "Hey, some lady tried to off herself here the other day. Nearly died, if Hunter hadn't been there. Wonder why she shot herself over a letter?" The only thing that really happened recently:sleep: Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - takemori - 04-17-2012 ' Wrote:"Hey, some lady tried to off herself here the other day. Being able to do so ingame would probably get the watering holes used much more. I know I'd use them! Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - Narcotic - 04-17-2012 I'm afraid, adding it to the mod itself would be too difficult to implent. And I doubt, that even 1/10 of the active Disco players even read the rumors and infocards sometimes. Sad actually, since some stuff is quite interesting and well written. (Infocards do also help me, writing my biography stuff.) Watering Holes - Why are they so dead? - takemori - 04-17-2012 Yeah, the infocards are really helpful. While traveling to Planet Denver for a delivery, I was reading the infocards of stations and planets I passed. I was able to set up my characters current business dealings because the infocards gave me very good background on the planets/stations. It doesn't give me all the information I need though, so I have some liberties with my business.:) |
