There's something wrong with the Tagging system... - chovynz - 05-28-2008

Why am I getting the feeling that these guys think Nikko shot the pirate?

Guys...The pirate...who is NOT Nikko...shot and pirated Nikko, because the PIRATE
thought Nikko had a BD tag (which he did not - except from the PIRATE's Pov.)

After the PIRATE logged back in, Nikkos tag was changed.

Nikko wasn't doing the shooting.

Nikko is asking how many other incidents are happening because people are seeing a wrong tag?

Edit: I misread. Fixed.

Like I said before, if people tell you they shot you by tag, screenie it, and if they don't repent, dock, log, and go read the server rules again, report them...

You MUST scan ID before any kind of attack.

I have had this problem before, with the wrong tags showing. I have, on occasion, seen the incorrect tag. It IS still important, however to check someone's ID, although I think we must all realize that this little problem could lead to grave difficulties to people with generic IDs, such as mercs, freelancers, and pirates.

If it looks fishy, ask them about that. When they aren't traders, you have a lot more time.

Quote:Poll: Should TAG's be ignored in RP?
Yes [ 6 ] [24.00%]
No [ 19 ] [76.00%]
This is sort of sad. It means 76% of people voting in this thread haven't read the "SCAN FIRST" part of the server rules.:rtfm:

Anyways, back to business.

I propose the following change, if possible, to the game: For specific IDs, have the Tag = ID for as long as the pilot is Green status with ID faction. "Cheater" tag should be applied to characters who no longer have Green status with their ID faction. My Navy pilot is sick of being mistaken for a "donut muncher". Tags should work as they do now only for generic IDs.

Actually, I voted no because while ID determines who you are and what server rules are attached to you, tag determines your friends. I've usually found it to be a valuable tool, and so think it should be considered for initial attitudes, although not based upon for serious action- unless, of course, you can get the person to verify it.

There has been discussion of how to do this, but Korrd, a few others and I are still trying to automate name-changes, a relatively easy fix(speaking of which, I need to go get an MSN): this is more of a long term project than anything else.

Plus, what about Guard Tags?

I would just like to point out that I too have seen this happen numerous times, and my game is also 100% legit. (It was a freebie for participating in a playability study at MS a couple years ago.)

From what I have observed, the glitch occurs most often when I have been in space for a while and when someone comes onto the scanners who has no affiliation. I have seen any number of tags, but most often from the most recent hostile group I had encountered.

I think it might be related to the bug that will sometimes briefly show a player's name when a selected NPC goes through a jumpgate.

Unfortunately, unless someone has access to the source code for the game, I doubt there is any way to fix either of these.

As for completely ignoring tags, I don't think it's a good idea. Tags, when functioning properly, can greatly help identify who is who and how they might act. Obviously there are problems with the tags, and they should never take a back seat to the ID's, but ignoring them completely is not an option I'd consider.

Tag? Sorry do you mean the tag that you added with your characters name [RMH] Mr Smith or the Freelancer IFF tag colour coded Green Friendly, White Neutral, and Red adversary, or the ID you purchase and fit in the ships hull? Because at the end of the day the first two within Discovery RP have no impact want so ever, its the Discovery ID tag fitted in the ships hull which indicates your RP allegiances.
The name tag been displayed incorrectly or not at all have more to do with server lag than where you got your copy of Freelancer. So in all its always best to check the other players Disc ID tag and not go by either the freelancer IFF indicator, or any indications within their character name tag.
Although it would be nice if players could be trusted to include a tag with their characters name that matches the Discovery ID been carried, but this would be like trusting players to keep their Rep in line with Disco ID allegiances.

Uh, both of those are enforced by server rules. If you exploit your rep sheet, it gets changed, harshly.

I shot a level 40 "civilian' today because he was tagged "nomad" (my last hostile fight had been against nomads).

A bit later, I was seen as a "Hessian"--I am Hogosha, just barely untagged.

So in each case, we had no affiliation but another player saw us with one.

And I do believe affiliation is useful.

Say I want to fly a KNF ship but with ties to the Hogosha. I might carry the KNF ID but keep the Hogosha affiliation to reflect that it is Hogosha recruits manning the KNF ship.

Just some thoughts.
