When I'm playing in-game I treat travel times in real-time.

When I'm writing a story on the forums I treat travel times in more realistic terms.

I try not to reference it as much as possible.

Maybe they were working with Liberty to recover the artifact.

I just play in real time.

This.

Then again, maybe a day per system with the use of lanes... without lanes, maybe a week? who know's..

This is going to take a while:
I, personally, would have real-time for both in-game and stories. However, realism is an issue. In the early days of Sirius, it took years to travel between systems. This was, from my point of view, going much slower than even low impulse power on modern engines. As they got more sophosticated, ie faster, it began to take months. This is on, say, mid-standard impulse. In the last 200 years A.S, we have cruise engines and modern impulse. When Jump Gates were invented, they cut out long years/months of crossing interstellar space. Trade Lanes reduced in-system travel times immensly, making a week/weeks long-journey between Manhattan and Pittsburgh take only a few minutes-hours. Now, from this logic, it should take at least a day or two to travel between Houses. Crossing empty space within a system presents new questions as well. Modern cruise-capable engines are probably ten times as fast as primitive engines used by early settlers, making a trip from Manhattan to Rochester take a day or two by my reckoning. Now, a 'round-trip' starting in Omicron Alpha would consist of the following:
  • Malta-Beta JH: 1.5-2 days
  • Alpha JH-Sigma: 19 JH- A day
  • Beta JH-Ogashawa-2-3 days
  • Ogashawa-Honshu JG (via TL): 1 hour
  • Sigma-19 gate-Sigma-13 gate (Via multiple TL's): 2 hours
  • Right across Sigma-13 on the Tradelanes to Frankfurt gate: 4 hours
  • Traversing Rheinland Tradelanes to the Bretonian border: At least 2 days
  • Through the Omegas to Cambridge: Half a day
  • On the Bretonia tradelanes to Liberty border: 2 days again
  • Independant Worlds: 2.5 hours
  • Liberty Tradelanes-Rheinland border: Another 2-day trip
  • <strike>Waiting until the war ends: Several centuries</strike> Sneaking through Hudson and Bering via Jumpholes: 6 days-a week
  • Reconnecting to Rheinland TL system: A day
  • Back on the Rheinland tradelanes to an Omegas access point: 2 days
  • Through the Omegas to Omicron Theta: Full week
  • Through Corsair territory: 3 days
  • Sneaking around the minefield in Eta: 2-3 days
  • Eta JH-Malta: 1.5-2 days
So, from taking years to go from New York-Colorado, we have about a month to take a round-trip of Sirius.
I said it'd take a while.
