What would be "cool" is a tractor beam that could drag small ships.

Something like a gun that would shoot a small projectile like the size a asteroid, and trap the ship inside of it?
Just an Idea that might happen someday.

Thou there might be a need of a physics engine.

As for the use I mean like for police tring to capture human players or something.

Good luck with that:P

I don't think this is possible for Freelancer

It is a good idea, but I think 13 is right...if it could be done, it probably would have been done by now.

Ah well.

Last December, I RP'ed a tow-cable. There was no visual to go with it, but I got the point across pretty well.

We just gotta work w/ what we've got.

Yeah I know. Good Idea, and all.

The only way I see it withought a physics engine is something like a instant teleporter that keeps the player within X amount of distance.

It might be possible utilising the current tractor beam and some edits, maybe some hook work. I doubt it though.

Or privately asking the one being towed to fly very close behind your thruster trail till you get to where you're going.:)

the easiest way to drag a target is to get into formation. - not a perfect way - but at least the other ship follows automaticly. of course you don t see a cable or a beam then - and you cannot drag someone that doesn t want to be dragged.

but a lot of RP is left to imagination and to how the other players roleplay "with" you. ( cloaking of ships, jumping out of a system not using a jumphole, defense measures such as planetary missiles, planetary bombardements etc. etc. )

The current tractor beam doesn't actually _drag_ anything. You'll notice that anything you're tractoring doesn't physically move; it actually disappears after a few seconds of being hit (but remaining immobile).

Ok, so you engage the beam, fly 50k to your destination, turn off the beam, and the target warps to you.....PERFECT! Who's gonna do the coding?
