Size of a system - looqas - 03-17-2009 Most probably everyone has noticed that some systems are bigger than others. And some feel huge, but that's just a perception of it, for example New York is vast, but feels quite ok because it's full of stuff. Whereas the notorious Omega-47 or Newcastle seem very big. Even tradelanes do not save Newcastle IMO. What's this gotta to do with anything? First I, for one, like to avoid systems that I don't like. And one quite big factor is the size of the system (or rather the perception how big it feels) in deciding if I like it or not. I just don't whoop for joy when I have to travel distances of over 50k be that in cruise or over the tradelanes. Conversely I like objects being spaced so that you can interdict someone if you want (Chugoku anyone?) On the other hand some systems feel tiny. Like Omega-7. You get to places too quickly. I personally need time and space to prepare myself for eventualities (RPing, docking, taking care of things) and I just get irritated that those travel times are so short. Everything seems to blow up into your face too quickly. Personally I like them medium sized, Dresden, New Berlin, Manchester, New London. While the absolute size of the system might be bigger or smaller in my examples the distances between the objects of interest are spaced nicely. So they all feel medium to me. It has more to do with overall feel of the place than the actual size of the system. My opinion of a good system is it to have 3-4 bases spaced about 31k-40k apart from each other. The spacing can be a bit bigger if there're TLs in it and a little less if there are just holes. Size of a system - tazuras - 03-17-2009 I like variety, that is not an option so I did not vote. I didn't even think about adding it. It just highlights how differently people see and feel things. To me those system that offer too great a variety in terms of Disco are the ones I dislike most.;) Size of a system - Tenacity - 03-17-2009 When I'm playing police or military characters, I like medium systems, so small the enemy cant hide for long but cant get away too quickly either. When I'm playing trader / smuggler characters, I like small systems, so it doesnt take long to get across them. When I'm playing a pirate/unlawful character, I like large systems so it's easier to hide. Size of a system - fpsdoug - 03-17-2009 I kinda had an idea just now. Don't know if anyone suggested it but could we make improved engines? To keep it from getting to imbalanced it would not be able to be mounted with an armor upgrade. This allows people to explore faster but also not be able to survive as well in a fight. Just a little idea that popped in my head, shoot it down or expand on it if you want. I thought if this because it often gets tedious flying in large - huge systems with 350 cruise engines. Maybe more like 400-450? I like large systems because it has a sense of realism, but flying 100k+ from one JH to the other across Colorado or California is not fun. The speed modding detector is tied to cruise speed, so I think it's a no-go, but interesting idea to toy with. Tha cap currently is 420, so engines up-to that are ok I guess? Size of a system - Cyberanson - 03-17-2009 I like the size of huge systems quite much. The problem, especially with Newcaslte is the large vacuum between potetnial action points. (Action point is my name for areas, where the action may go on: mining fields, bases, trading routes) If action points would be closer together even huge systems would attract more players. This could be achieved in different ways: adding bases or minefields, moving jump gates in order to create intercept points of trade routes and pirating routes. Any comments from the developers on that? Size of a system - Friday - 03-17-2009 Yes, and increasing max engine speed also mucks around with the economy (as it is based on profit vs. time). Size of a system - Rudo - 03-17-2009 I'd like Newcastle more if it were better patrolled. But as it is there's no risk smuggling in there. ...scratch that. There's plenty of risk. I've been flying the same shipment of Light Arms to Cape Wrath from the Manchester JH for two days now, the server keeps bloody crashing when I get to around the 20-25k mark. (EDIT: I tested this in Open SP just to be sure. It's not the cause.) |
