Community Input: Experimental Jumpgate Animation - Antonio - 01-10-2025

Quite a few of you have already seen the experimental jumpgate in Connecticut. For those who didn't, you are free to go through the Connecticut minefield in sector B3 and dock with the jumpgate. When you dock, the jumpgate has a different jump exit animation than usual jumpgates. Instead of spending the entire 2nd half of the jump animation in the jump tunnel, you exit a bit earlier, giving your ship a perception of literally "flying into the jumpgate".

The question to the community is: Would you like to see this new jump animation applied to all jumpgates? Would you like jumpholes to be affected as well? This is purely a visual change, you cannot take environmental damage.

Below is an example of the New York - California jumpgate:

The Connecticut jumpgate in question:

Kinda feels more like a Jumphole only thing to me.
No idea why, just my brain telling me that Jumpholes are more random in their behavior including the place you're dropped out.

I like this, however it feels the sequence is extended somewhat.

If the timings were a bit tighter, I'd like this a lot more Smile

Nice work!

EDIT: My vote if this were to be a thing is Jump Holes only.

I'd actually like to only see it apply to Jumpdrives.

My primary idea/internal fantasy of jump drives starts at Star Wars destroyer jump-ins, and continues with the Freelancer opening cutscene with Coalition ships jumping in and the Colony Ships jumping out. Ship-mounted jump tech has had a place of the long jump-ins (and the stretched out ship unstretching on arrival, but I don't think that's possible with this engine).

But that's just my opinion.

I think the animation will immediately fall flat the moment the jumpgate is not in open space. While of course gameplay mechanics stop us from slamming into a rock behind said jumpgate, in-setting they're capable of operating safely even in fairly congested nebulas precisely because you do not reenter normal space until the gate itself. Plus, it will just look jank to spend a few seconds phasing through rocks/mines on arrival to the gate. You can already see it with the Connecticut gate hosing you down with mines like it's peak mosquito season.

this personally.

It's too jarring otherwise, also we don't have a view of what it looks like from another player perspective

It looks cool and smooth but I could take it or leave it. Won't hurt me any if it's put in or not.

I tend to agree with the sentiment about this making more sense for jump holes, or perhaps drives, than it does for gates. It's a very nice animation though, so I think it should be added to the game in some capacity. I also would like to see the animation from the other end, and I'm sure enough people looking at this thread would be interested in seeing it to the extent that it would be a good idea to post it here.

Absolutely not for jump gates. Possibly for jump holes. Would definitely be cool for jump drives.

Edit: Ruairi raises a good point. Should definitely go in for atmospheric entries!

For jump drives and atmosphere entries, sure. All others? I don't think so. Looks too weird.
