i pirated in a bactarian for ages, as 500 ore wasnt that much to steal, so the CR/IMG didnt bother when i came around and asked for their "precious" ore..... Recently i used a Camara to trade, made 14.5m in 2 days (roughly 4 hours trading in total)....
I just feel that, they could be better. Even more effective at being allround vessels
I love it when the Freighter topics come up. I'm a long-time freighter-lover myself, and would love to see these awesome little ships be given some sort of greater purpose in the game. I wouldn't say that freighters in general need a "buff", though. There's only so much that we can improve stats-wise without making freighters too powerful. Although I did make a topic a while back about a few freighters that I'd like to see bumped up from Mk 1 status.
But I don't think that freighters need more powerful guns or more powerful shields. What they need is something that will convince players to use them for their originally intended purpose. They need some gimmick that might make people seriously consider buying a freighter over a transport. And Boss's algorithms, which no one here seems to have notice, would probably do that very well. Per unit, cargo would be more profitable off-loaded by a freighter than it would be if it were sold all at once by a 5K transport. He explained it to me over Skype once a while back, and it really interested me. If we could implement something like this, we might see more freighters buzzing about.
And yes, the 4.86 speed boost will be lovely as well.

Its ugly
Actually. It only got retextured. Check that model versus the ingame one, same ship.

Not the exact same. The Turanic Raiders Freighter was remodeled to have a more CSV-ish look to it (as is seen by the cockpit of the current CSF), but the basic shape is almost identical.
The algorithm would be interesting. The problem with trading in a freighter is that is pure RP, the profit is nowhere near transport profits. This is good for established players, but doesn't really facilitate use by those needing to build up a bank-roll.
Secondly, there are too few top tier freighters. There's what the Griz, RAT, Bactrian and Correo? I definitely would have looked at flying a freighter as a privateer, but there really isn't one that's good for the role withing Sirius-wide and Bretonia tech.
Although, I have a friend using the RAT to try out the Marauders faction idea. And my attack Hegemon is scare of the thing. So the high up freighters definitely have a role.
And yeah, Vanilla Clydesdale with full vengeance turrets was way too much fun.

Also it was an import with a terrible texture, which usually spells disaster for a ship's long term shelf life.
I think the developers have balanced freighters pretty well, but I agree with my fellow freighter lovers that this ship class needs a special place other than being "sort of" good at everything. 4.86 speed modifications, mining bonus, freighter-only weapons, Boss's algorithms, torps mounts, perhaps scanner protection systems. All said & done freighters will always be my favourite ship class as they are so durable & versitile & suits my bimble about explore Sirius RP. Its not about the money - I have a boring transport for that.
I'd personally say you can use them beautifully for a little RP. And they get you started as a new player.
And as for the models... Well... I wont say anything.
I just got myself a Dromedary... 2(?) days ago. I love it, really. And smuggling in a freighter is much more realistic than smuggling in a BWT...
Anyway, a problem is that, for some reason, most people don't take freighters seriously. That's due to people thinking of them as another money-making-only-ship. And since any "good" player has a transport, people tend to laugh at freighter pilots.
So, maybe something really, really made freighters special. The beforementioned algorithms (no idea what they are), maybe a device that shielded them from scanning (up to a certain range), or something.
And I think that the speed boost will greatly increase the number of freighters used for smuggling, since they can then outrun law enforcers. Because, in their current state, they don't stand a chance against pretty much anything.
