Heh, alltough I think all that cannibalism stuff and player/character same pattern of insult conrtibutes to horrofying corsair reputation rather than lame anyone. Heh just imagine a mother threatening her kids not to walk outside at late evenings, becouse corsair might get them and eat them.
Horde of mystified savages and cannibals. Subhumans to some. Well, way more threatening than regular miner with a gun.
Yeah, Zoners on Crete seems like a reasonable enough explanation.
I'm wondering though, with the Ventru sacrifice being such an important part of Corsairs' history and the only lore-based example of it seemingly born out of necessity, perhaps they would see cannibalism 'today' as almost insulting to their historical conscience?
Or would they choose to honour it by replicating it (kind of)? Just a thought.
Ok, I got my answer, thanks guys. I wasn't aware of Zoners landing at Planet Crete. I always thought the Corsairs went to the Freeports to buy food instead of having the Zoners come to them.
Regarding Slartibartfast's comment on cannibalism, I don't think cannibalism is replicated. The Ventru line is probably still honored since they gave their lives for the survival of the Corsairs, but I don't think it goes any farther than that. I am under the impression that the practice died out long ago after the Corsairs managed to get food from the Zoners. As for whether or not being called a cannibal is offensive, I'm not sure.

It is very offensive and denigrates the noble sacrifice of the Ventru.
Although as Espi remarks, Crete still does suffer food shortages from time to time, and we do have so many captured pilots who otherwise would simply face execution, and I myself have added a religous significance to it in my own stories, very much along the lines of Mayan mythology.

I really do think it's silly that everyone and his mother seems to know. Perhaps it may have gotten around to some people through the rumor mill, but really I don't think most people in Sirius would know or believe it.
So what if someone does call someone's character a cannibal? How to you respond? Personally, I use it as an intimidating tool on my Corsair. Yes, I am a cannibal, do you really want to fight me knowing that I might tractor in your pod and eat you? Scary stuff. Reacting to somewhat silly RP might just make it excellent RP. The back and forth is much better than the initiation, I think.
[8:32:45 PM] Dusty Lens: Oh no, let me get that. Hello? Oh it's my grandma. She says to be roleplay.
[12:49:19 AM] Elgatodiablo: You know its nice that you have all that proof and all, Bacon... but I just don't believe you.

True, true, done well it does make for some good interaction.
I remember, i once found an Order Geb cruising through Gamma with a hold full of Hunter pilots. I stopped him and he said he was taking them for interrogation.
I offered to "help", and then roleplayed opening a video link and....you ever seen that one scene in Hannibal?
When he opens up that dudes skull when he's still alive?
It was cool. I totally got a kick out of it.

corsairs are survivalists and opportunists. do you really think that they wouldn't do it again if necessary? a ship stranded in space without engine fuel or a few weeks... it's darwinism. nothing more, nothing less. if your co-pilot eats your dead body, nobody needs to know, nobody needs to care. he lives, a ship is salvaged, one less hungry neck to feed. done.
I don't doubt that they would do it again, but right now, I don't think they're desperate enough. The Corsairs have just enough food from smuggling and trade with the Zoners, along with their own food grown in biodomes. I just don't see cannibalism being practiced right now since the Corsairs are much better off than before.
