And again silly people that lack intellect turn a reasonable thread which had a point and a nice discussion into an indie/faction war thing, just because one idiot mentions something about it, that does not mean you immediately have to hit "REPLY!!" and post your even more idiotic opinion of how he's wrong, and then in the end add "Stop with the indie/faction war" as everyone in the last 10 bloody posts has ended. Now, all of you, read the bloody topic, and then answer properly, it's not about any non existent indie/faction war, it's just about authority in RP.

Titan clearly you don't see that this question will never be answered unless the Admins intervene and either say the factions have the authority or it is a free for all. Till then, these topics only serve to incite flames and make the gap between factions and independants even wider.

You can discuss it all you wish but it will always remain that faction players have a tendancy to try and enforce their 'authority' whilst Independants have a habit of going against it. There will always be conflict while things remain the way they are.

As far as I'm concerned, it's the ID the ship is holding. If he's Navy ID in Liberty for example, I would expect him to uphold Liberty law as it is written in the SP. That is his first and foremost duty. Anything else is up to him. It's an RP server after all and as long as he performs with the RP of a liberty naval vessel in mind, he should get all the support the others (clans and indies alike) can give him.
For my money, I'd even go so far to say that the RM shouldn't fire on independant rheinland cap-ships for example. If the ship holds a rheinland military ID and is RP'd as a Rheinland ship, any other rheinland military ship firing on it should be sanctioned. (sorry but thats what I believe, assuming that the cap-ships are available in public space).

If the untagged police/navy/faction ship plays their RP as the police/navy/faction should do, then he has as much authority as the next guy, be he clan or not.

All the above assumes the indie plays with the right RP. All this changes of course when he doesn't......
but thats for a different thread.

Factions don't necessarily have to help out an indie who bites off more than he can chew. However, the admins have made it quite clear that factions aren't allowed to used OORP rules as an excuse to PvP whore people who are RPing perfectly well within that NPC faction's established RP within the mod. So for example the [LN] faction doesn't necessarily have to help an indie cruiser who's fighting a pirate, but nor can they attack the indie cruiser for acting without their (ie the OORP player faction's) permission.

EDIT: On the issue of flamewars, I would like to point out that all my combat characters are in factions so I'm most definitely not a faction hater

They are not at all so different and all this whining about faction laws and independant's not roleplaying only helps to create a rift between us all.

(...)

STOP WITH THE INDEPENDANT/FACTION WHINING.

No longer active online due to a dwindling amount of non-PvP (trading, pirating, mining, etc.) fun in the new version.

Linkus, the more you keep mentioning the faction/indie things, the more it will be "unresolved", its funny how such a thing didn't even exist a few months back, no one complained, no one even asked about it, and now every other day on the forums, someone mentions it and all hell breaks loose. Try NOT to talk about it, its rather simple, the less you talk, the easier it will be for people to let go. There is no bloody question that needs to be answered by the admins, factions and indies have the same authority given by the NPC faction they belong to. They can enforce the same laws. Factions have one advantage there, they can make new laws, which then have to be obeyed by the NPC faction/indies/player faction if it is valid and within RP. That's all the difference there is and the admins don't really need to respond.

People fly independent ships because they don't want to be bossed around. But along with that freedom comes the inability to boss others around unless they willfully submit.

@ Patriot: You are off topic ... not about a division between indies and factions ... good role play is based on how the player responds in game and not based on whether he's in a faction or not. Now ... please stick to the topic at hand. This is not about indies vs factions.
Do the Independents have the same Authority than the official faction..............Easy answer...........NO.............why?

@ Linkus: You are off topic ... the question is whether (in role play) an indie can "enforce the laws" as if he were a member of the faction. And its not an admin question since its not dealing with server rules. This is a role play issue ... not a server rule issue.

@ blubba: Thank you Blubba. You are exactly right ... this is about the ID that the character has aboard his ship. If it says Liberty Navy ID ... he's Liberty Navy ... regardless if he's a member of the official faction or not. If he goes out of bounds ... breaks a server rule or violates a rule/law created by LN ... then its an issue between the "leadership" of the faction and that indie (or between that indie and the admins if its a server rule violation). But we need to avoid making assumptions that he's an OORP Liberty Navy simply because he's not factionised.

@ mwerte: For the most part you are correct ... people don't join factions because it limits their choices on ships and such. But this game is not centered around the rights of the faction. Its for all players to enjoy ... NOT just for the few "privileged" folks who run the factions. Liberty ... the actual word liberty is completely opposite of the word fascism. Now ... is this server about liberty or about fascism? Are we free as individuals on this server or are we subject to the factions? Well ... this is a completely different topic and deserves its own poll ... so until you find this poll on the forums ... lets ignore this discussion.

Dunno if it's been said already, but my opinion is that if I see a Navy IFF with a matching ID, and he asks me to stop for a scan or whatever, then yes, I'll stop and respect him the same way I would for an [LN] tagged pilot, I don't think somebody should have to join an official faction in order to enjoy Roleplaying as a Military or Police pilot.

-shrug- That's just my opinion though..
