Depends on the amount of traders and the routes they use. It's hard to predict the patterns of certain traders and how many are doing them. You need to make charts and watch there patterns for a few hours.

If you do get a pirating buddy, make sure to hit the popular routes. If you hit about two or three traders a day, you lost half your profits splitting it with your partner.

Besides, the good traders pay the second you say, "Halt and transfer the protection money." I demand only 1.5 million. It's a reasonable amount and traders can afford to lose it when they make about 3 mil on the load they're hauling alone. It's the ridiculous amounts you run from.
