If we DO get rid of capital ships, can we take all the current ships and repurpose, rescale and remodel them? Because it'd be a huge shame to waste all those beautiful models, and some times a fighter just don't cut it for the RP you want to do.
As a cap ship player and RP'er, if it will serve to the server and roleplay, which is mostly non-existant or uninteresting nowadays, I would gladly sacrifice my capital ship usage.
To be sincere, wandering around in my capship, seeing all kinds of "facepalm" situations doesn't help me wanna play this game more. Yes, capship has some advantages (like being able to ignore NPCs or do capship RP) but since the gameworld itself is a failure in RP nowadays, who cares about one capital ship player being able to write a few lines of good rp...
Aye, but in vanilla lore it's quite clearly stated (as a rumour mind you) that the Outcasts need H-fuel and raw materials imported by the junkers to power their quote bigger ships unquote. So considering the fact that in vanila lore the Outcasts have capital ships plus all of their blights it's not hard to figure out that the Corsairs will have those too, especially being arch enemies with the aforementioned faction. The Zoners however...I don't think it's a good idea for the Zoners to have such huge capital ships but meh, who am I to say
I just wanted to clarify my above statement, as I now look back and realize that "resize, repurpose and rebalance" doesn't make much sense as a stand alone statement. And, for the record, I don't consider Gunboats to be capital ships, and on some level, destroyers like the Kusari Destroyer represent yet unused class of 'Heavy Gunboat' or 'Frigate' or whatever you want to call it that could potentially be used by factions that did not have capital ships in vanilla without violating the spirit of this proposal
Basically, lets assume that we go ahead with a plan in which any faction that did not have Capital ships in Vanilla no longer has them. This essentially means 'Everyone Besides House Militaries.' Now, I'm assuming that Gallia would be an exemption to the 'everone who didn't have one in vanilla' rule, as they never were in vanilla, but according to their lore are a full fledged house. Nonetheless, this still leaves us with a huge number of unused ship models, but more than that, a gaping hole of missed RP potential. Now, we could just say 'deal with it' and go about our disco lives, but I would suggest that we take a tip from ALG and recycle. Now, I'm no expert modeler, but I do know that there is a scaleing tool availible for most programs capable of editing freelancer ship models. And I do know that only 3 things set a Capital ship apart from a fighter; They are multi-manned ships, they have much larger firepower, and they have a e-peen factor. I would suggest that we keep the first aspect, allowing people to pilot craft that are larger than single-person snubs (and thus allowing people to fufil their dreams of becoming a true starship capitan, instead of just some fighter jock,) and heavily downsize the second aspect until most ships fit into the gunship to very light destroyer range of combat capabilities. The third aspect we can toss in the trash, if you guys don't mind. So, why not scale down the already existing capital craft, like the Ranseur, or the Legate, or the Jormund, and turn them into smaller ships that fufill the same inRP role of a ship that is 'large, impressive, and could potentially take on the role of a flagship and general rally point,' but loses the ingame role of being a huge bludgon with which to beat anything smaller than you over the head with. The ships would, of course, be rebalanced after their resize, but not in a way that made it such that we had a billion-gazillion of the exact same gunboat (but with diffrent shapes) but instead were each tweaked to make them unique, interesting, and novel. Balancing be damned; if it flys, someone will find a way to kill it, and the server will adjust (note: This is not a call for the balancing team to retire, or stop being awesome in any way. Please don't leave, we NEED YOU, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T RELEASE THE SABRES AGAIN I BEG OF YOU I PROMISE I'LL BE GOOD I PROMISE!) And, perhaps we could make more non-combatant capital ships like the Zoner Juggernaught? Some people want to fly a huge ship just for the sake of flying a huge ship, and would really like an outlet for which to RP a sort of 'mobile station,' with multiple crewmembers running around, each with their own lives, interacting with each other as they in turn interact with the outside world, and other players in Disco. So, there you have it; If you want to change the game, don't just remove capships; Resize, Repurpose and Rebalance.
On a slightly unrelated note, I would just like to reiterate my beleife that a lolwut without a capship is still a lolwut. No amount of mod-based changes can change a person's core essence of being. Only we as players can fix that. In short;
Noob-caps is really a problem. yestarday while raiding leeds on my Rouge GB I was attacked by HMS Cruiser and GB. after they docked, repaired and engaged at me again. dont it abit sad?
and about gankers is another story, like 4 dreads were attacking 1 sabre
Im just not fan of Caps that bigger/slower then AI Cruiser, but we really need to discrease cap-numbers at least at 50%. but as were sayed: it is too late. so many players will be unhappy, and this will harm server later in some way or another...
Quote:Capship removal is possible. It actually happened in this mod.
IMG has lost the Zephyr, and instead "only" has a cruiser now. And... it's perfectly fine not to have the biggest ship that is possible.
I personally think that Battleships should only be owned by the house militaries.
I also think that all factions should have caps, but not the biggest class (because cap-flying is fun for some of us and we play for fun).
I utterly agree. I would state that the IMG does more actual business as a faction (with real live human players RPing) that any other faction (maybe FTU, but we are allied). Yet we are totally ok with having cruisers and below.
The starving Hispanic people eaters and a drug cartel can field dreadnaughts? What the hell? I thought that Malta IRP had a very low population and put a premium on skilled pilots. Over the years with the amount of Outcast caps that have been blown up by the IMG alone you would not have anymore pilots to field your caps. Malta has only one major city on the entire (inhospitable) planet :crazy:and you have trouble bearing children . And the Sairs buy ossies instead of buying food; how have you not overthrown and eaten the so called elders yet?
Lets leave the big caps to the "big 4". Knock the ossie down to cruiser specs to match its cruiser size and we've made it fair.
Stupid newbie, but how about this; Folk simply can't buy a capital ship.
They can get them, though, in the same sort of way people get barges, apparently. Save in this case their faction leads give it out or at least a GM would give it out for faction leaders. For the sake using a example that I actively know about, the SCRA| lads only allow people of a certain rank to be able to use capital ships. Why not the same thing, here?
Now, granted, there will probably be a fair amount of favoritism and it might get a bit mucked up if (player) faction leads kinda stop paying attention and of course people with the ships would kinda be prompted to do it, but it ought to make capital ships more... Well, capital ships.
And, of course, people who want to play as a Cap' would probably kind get left in the dust. And I could see the necessity of buffing up Caps to compensate for the fact that there isn't so many of them and there doesn't need to be a way for a fighter to be able to down one.
Gunboats might still be available, though, to allow people at least a taste of it. Free Frigates/destroyers for all. But cruisers, carriers and battleships? Only for the white hats.
(Edit: And, of course... People... Would have to lose their ships...)

Me too. But oh well....

1) since the game is supposedly balanced 1 to 1, its merely 4 to 1 in VHF terms, as I intentinally twisted words of some admin dev I recall
2) how you tell whos gonna have the boat?

Yeh agreed. Ive been to destruction of approximately 200 OC caps of all sizes. Maybe even more. Aint it sad?
