Liner License for liners only and BS license for BS only.
Actually that rule I believe has more to do with modding the game to allow you to mount class 10's on a starflea type of thing. Even if it is as you say, putting 'You can only mount this on BS without violating server rules" in the info card is a nice way to avoid confusion.
I propose, we make the Liner make it more valuable then. It is in my eye an RP ship before everthing else, but let's not exagerate it to the point it is ONLY a RP ship - that is pointless and people jsut wont fly it. Make it more costly, and people who seek profit would think of it as not so good an investment over the train.
And maybe a better armament over the liner. I mean, it transports people, not merchandise. If it get shot by pirates, 4 thousand men get killed, whereas a train, well... the crew rply speaking should be what, a dozen?
Well I figure one would armour the ship with human lives aboard more then they would a cargo ship. (See the trains exposed pods) Just double the price. Only a RPer would pay 100mil for a ship taht has an equal or better cargo counterpart for half the price.
' Wrote:Alrighty then, I am going to ignore that you have made a direct jab at me.
It wasn't a jab, you already said you weren't impartial. I know I don't like seeing my favorite ships changed, but it happens. It just so happens your favorite ship had its offense and defense nerfed in exchange for cargo space.
I proposed the cargo space be reduced in exchange for additional speed. I didn't say speed = life; I didn't say speed is a good replacement for the lost offense/defense, I specifically said that the speed increase is to make trading/docking more efficient. Liners get people to their destinations quickly, unlike transports hauling Engine Parts. It's a tradeoff to keep the RPers in Liners and the trade-whores out.
Your points about the offensive/defensive weakness of liners (at least now compared to old) are valid, but the currently massive cargo hold does nothing to help with that problem. It would be best to divorce the two issues but you are intertwining them. Saying "well if my survivability is lower now, I want to be able to haul as much scrap metal as a Whale" isn't fixing anything really, unless you just don't care that Liners are now stretched out transports with lots of windows.
I'm all for making liners something unique with better class 6/7 turrets, but I don't think making them something boring in 4.84 is the way to get there.

to subjugate the enemy's army without doing battle is the highest of excellence."

Thats exactly what they are. At least as far as game play mechanics goes. They are an alternate form of trade ship. In an Ideal world all liners pilots would focus upon carrying the 'people cargo's' for at least part of the trading journey. However such things are hard to regulate.
In the last version they were the one you wanted to think twice about engaging but carried limited cargo. In this version they haul larger amounts of cargo/passengers with better amour. The class 8 guns having been stripped to avoid some rule conflicts they were having in the past.
Please spell out what you think a player will be doing with his/her time while flying one of these liners you are proposing?
I'm not fond of the idea of giving liners (other than perhaps the Beetle) a faster thrust speed... As far as 'realism' goes it makes no difference, but as far as Discovery goes, large ship =/= fast. Plus, increasing thrust speed wouldn't really matter for the purpose of getting passengers to their destination quicker... Traveling ships use either cruise or trade lanes most of the time. Thrust is pretty much entirely for combat (and sometimes the little trip between two trade lanes).
I'd really like to see liners go back the way they were, and just count them as transports, even if they can use some better equipment. The lower cargo/larger size makes up for those bonuses, and there's still no way that a Liner would be able to beat a decently-flown gunboat (or bomber, probably).

I got cocky once and thought that I could in the last version. Dab wasted no time in correcting me. A GB has a liner matched or beaten in every department.
Net necessarily. I have beat a GB in a Luxury Liner since the new mod release. They aren't totally useless in combat, but definitely less useful than before.
Don't forget that 11 lvl 7 guns that never suck up your energy can go a long way to doing some serious damage if your aim is good.

I don't understand the question.
