Yatahan, machete, sabre seem better to me.
Though depends where you fight, whom you fight... Like always.

Katana's nice, but it's not hard to break, as far as I know.

Funny how people in the beginning of the thread tried to argue with vids people compare the sharpness and durability of each to the other... such things matter none if you can't really handle them.

Voted for longsword.

I've been learning longsword fencing in Ars Ensis (part of HEMAC) for already three years (not as continuously as I wished to do so, but had no really huge breaks from it so far), and have learn many tricks, for example ones you can do utilizing the cross-guard. With that thing you can defend and attack in the same time, effectively retake dominance in a fight. Can't really see such a significant cross-guard at katanas. Another thing is that yes, you can stab with a longsword way more easily.

Note: While it looks cool to compare the durability of each by clashing blades edge to edge, at least in longsword to longsword combat you never ever do such. For starters: don't attack the blade, attack the wielder. There are techniques where you attack the blade to hit it away, but most of the hits go against the opponent, not the weapon.

Another note: Funny how those "professionals" tried the edges and points of the blades on that plate armor. Thing is, you don't do that in armored combat. Rather aim at the weak points, like armpit, neck, etc. It's THAT realistic to try out how much each sword can't do anything with plate armor.

lies , me and an old school friend bought some , and had frequent fights with them back in the days (when we were kids , I grew up now and play disco instead)
and yeah , you never block an attack with the sharp end of your sword , unless you wanna mess it up, I have the evidence in a chipped up totally raped katana in my room.

While what you said is true, this isn't a claymore by far

I totally agree that this test is bogus.
That is why I will attempt to test this myself , in my garden.
As you can see here I've set up my claymore already.
I'll make another picture of it after hacking into it with my katana to share the results.

Well that settles that debate. Thread over.

That guy -doesn't know- how to use a longsword. The longsword is, honestly, a great weapon, but no match an arabic curved blade.

I want to get off Mr. Igiss' wild ride.

Comparing a katana to a longsword is like comparing a tractor and a sportscar. Two completely different uses.

I would say it depends how many fights you have to do.

for a single fight I would recommend a katana because it is lighter (faster) than the long sword.
but if you go for war then I would prefer the long sword since on the long run the chance to broke it are lower.

I don't think cutting the body into pieces is necessary an advantage for the katana because the long sword will break the bones instead which lead almost to the same result in the battle: the opponent is incapacitated. Moreover, the chance the katana get stuck in the body or the armor is higher than with the long sword.

Katanas were absolutely wretched against armor, especially chainmail, or thick cloth and leather. Sure, they can stab, but their main useage was for slashing unarmored farmers and civilians that the Samurai were hired to kill. Sure they could cut one, two, or three bodies in half with enough muscle and force, but what if I just happened to be a european anything with a chainmail vest? You'll break one of my ribs at best.

And longswords were often blunted because you could be destructive with just the weight of the weapon, crushing helmets and armor, shattering bones all over the body. Sharpen the first few inches, you now have both a deadly thrusting weapon, and a blunt weapon.

Katanas were used by japanese mercenaries against unarmored opponents, longswords were used against everything else.
