This is part of an overall trend towards cataloging everything people do anywhere, and I don't like it.
The general attitude seems to be "unless there is obvious harm done, add more security" rather than "unless there is an obvious problem, respect privacy".
People shouldn't have to submit fingerprints, shouldn't have to carry IDs wherever they go, shouldn't have all their personal data stored in some archive.
Public opinion is perhaps changing slightly in Europe after the NSA scandal, but really it seems like too little, too late.
I don't have an Austrian passport, only a US passport (I'm a dual citizen), issued in 2006. I've been hoping that there will be a paradigm shift regarding privacy before it expires in 2016, but the way things are going that seems unlikely. Oh well.
