What will happen if it happens?..It'll happen?

If you do have larger asteroids, asteroid fields will most likely become extremely deadly to anything bigger than a fighter and if when the asteroids are shot, they split into say 4 smaller asteroids, you are effectively creating 4x more lag for the server. Mining may not cause a lot of lag for the server as it is, but you would effectively be multiplying the amount of miners by 4.
Not only that, but if the weapon was implemented too that shot many asteroids at once (Large radius, very low damage, perfect for area killing of asteroids) then you would create plenty more lag.

Still, it might not cause that much lag in the end, has anyone ever looked at how much lag mining does cause?

I agree with you Linkus i think that only miner ships can destroy the big astreoids.

why not just make minable asteroids and mark them as respawnable wrecks. If shot with a strong enough gun (mining gun - range 20m) "ore" falls out until the rock is empty. move on to another rock

You would need to know the exact position of it to mine from it. You would also find a lot of people mining from it, meaning it wont respawn enough.

Wouldn't work too well unfortunately. Not only would you clog up the nav map with many many wrecks, but many people would miss out on mining, which is one of the very few ways of making cash if you are new. So would damage the economy and also gameplay somewhat. Considering distances etc, it isn't worth mining stuff and giving it to another player to trade.

As someone who regularly mines I would say I love this idea!
Having them move around inside the sector as well would be cooler than
as is current.
There is a thread around here somewhere about dynamic asteriods.
Oh here it is.

Might be worth checking that out to see if it's an implementable
thing in one of the next mods.

This are my wishlist for an asteroid field.
Slightly higher risk.
Moving fields.
Bigger rocks that you can destroy. (Variety in destroyable rock shape sizes)

Actually one gripe I have about the whole game is everything is on a flat plane.
All the tradelanes are flat. Most planets docking moors in that flat plane.
The asteriods fields are centred on that flat plane. Most nebula are as well.

how about miner turrets that do no or close to no shield or hull damage, just Astroid damage. So only miners would have them and they could mine their big rocks

No shield damage is enough : You can't kill ships, but you can break asteroids.

This appart, I'm against this idea which would cause lag and hard work for admins.

OK for gentle RP, OK for gentle PvP too. What do you prefer ?
