do i need the external drive all the time to switch boot system, or can i just 'alt-tab' between the two?

Pretty sure you could just use a Win7 install DVD, Google for another guide, that will probably tell you how to do it.

No, the external drive is only needed to copy Windows to the hard drive on your Mac, once you've installed it you don't need to connect it again.

Not sure what you mean by alt-tabbing, you choose what operating system you want to start when you turn on the Mac, if you've chosen to run Windows, then you can't switch to OS X without restarting the computer.

If that is too much of an inconvenience, then try running Windows XP in VirtualBox, once you've installed VB just look for a guide on Google on how to set up XP in VB.

Once installed...

Boot XP in safe mode (mash F8 on startup until it gives you the menu, then select safe mode).

Install Guest Additions within safe mode and make sure you click "enable 3D" blar blar when you install it.

Restart comp

Install Freelancer

Profit...

(But like I said before, I wouldn't expect it to work very well, if at all, I couldn't get FL to run in VB but it could be my hardware causing a problem).

Unless they've radically changed Bootcamp you don't need an external drive; just a working Windows disc and a working serial. Make sure you've got some empty CD's or DVD's and start up bootcamp on the Mac (it's in the "Utilities" folder, I believe), it will explain everything and burn a disk with windows drivers and other applications for the macbook so you get (some of that) sweet apple reliability in windows / less hassle with drivers. Just follow the instructions on screen, it's dead easy and works perfectly.

This is what my friend has done, and has been successful:

Quote:hehehe It took me a few days but I got the song and dance down now. you'll need to install crossover (http://www.codeweavers.com/products/) run the install via crossover.
Crossover builds "bottles" for every windows program that you install. If you go in crossover one of the tabs is "manage bottles" in that window you'll have a tab allowing you to open that bottle's C: drive, that where you'll be able to access the EXE file.
Don't forget to go into your OS keyboard settings and click the "use F keys as F keys" box. If you don't do that you won't be able to accesss the main menu to save your games or other in-game commands.

Only bad part is, his sound gives off a horrendous screaming noise. Other than that, it is fully functional! Any suggestions to fix the sound?

Bring back the Manitoba System!
Happy Huntin'!

Sorry about the horrible grave dig, I was interested in seeing if anyone has any experience in running FL on a boot camped MacBook Pro Retina
