Want to live? Use them.
Fairness doesnt come into.
Last man standing is usual on this server lately.
If you are going to run its a good idea to conserve some for that.
Be smart with your bot and bat usage.
Dont waste them when you dont need them.
Know your opponent. Do you need them in this fight or not?
in a LF vs Dessie, it's probable you will. In a LF vs missile boat, hell yes.
LF vs VHF, depends on the craft and skill.
Just dont be afraid of using them. There's no set rules for using them.
For me it comes down to ... want to stay alive? Use 'em.

One of my main characters flies a little Scimitar. I use the agility and speed of it to simply avoid damage and if I do take too much, I tone down my agression. When in doubt though, I use my bots. Batteries are real emergancys, such as your hull being low and no bots left. For me in any case, each to their own.
If I hear the missile alert in a PvP battle I'll try to keep my shields up as long as possible.
If I can keep all my guns as long as possible the more likely I'll come out of the fight victorious.
If there isn't any missile fire I keep the bats for last.
I always keep my hull up full difference between survival and death from a mini shot is but a few pixels of hull.
If your shield goes down, leave it. When your hull drops a bar, use nanobots. Always try and use as few shield batteries as possible and dodge to try and regain shield, rather than shield-running, or shield-camping. It's better form and helps with PvP skills.
