' Wrote:About a year ago the number of players that can be on server got increased from 128 to 200.
Recently there are over 180 players on in the "primetime", while it's really nice the truth is that the lag during that makes fighter combat into random shooting on ghosts.
So the obvious question comes:
[color=#FF0000]Should number of player slots be reduced (I'd say to 170) to avoid extreme lag?
' Wrote:yes i do PvP, maybe once a week, if that, considering I play most days it is a ridiculous minority. Infact its probably been closer to a month now, where I haven't had a single fight - so its not for everyone that RP and PvP go together.
So i care little about lag, as long as I can communicate and get where I want to i'm happy. And I'd rather have more people to communicate with.
I can understand that lag during PvP events can be a pain, but perhaps schedule them for quieter times, or as suggested as second server, which character information can be easily transferred between.
There is no such thing as a PvP event. I dunno if your semi-insult was intentional or not, I just want to point this out.
I am currently in favour of reducing the number of NPCs by 50% or so, to see what happens.

NPCs spawning is scaled down automatically when the server load starts getting high. This scaling is most noticable when flying through guard systems.
It gets hard to find low-probability of spawn NPCs when there are lots of players on. The high probably NPCs are still around (at reduced numbers) but the NPCs like the 'wilde' are basically non-existant.

Bit selfish I have to say ...
The whining about players not be able to get on would be heard from here to Australia ... And back again.
And I suspect from the same people ... Along with the usual calls to password the server.
When all of you have perfect connections, then the server will not lag. Till then, the old, tired and slightly
over-clocked software is going to grumble now and again. Improving our rather expensive, and under-
utilised hardware isn't going to improve things either unfortunately ... Freelancer is not capable of using it.
So, look to improving you own connections first please ...

Well, sir Hoodlum, thing is that most of us -have- good connections.
Lag this topic is about, is server lag.
The other day, Saturday and Sunday to be precise, I was on in the evening, as I usually am.
And I was going about my business, there was an event etc. doesn't matter.
And I, along with 90% of other participants, had a relatively low ping ( Under 100, with 0% of all those lag/loss thingies ).
So I think this is what it's about.
Now I understand the limits of the engine, and if there's not anything that can be done, then so be it.
Personally, I'd prefer an alternative solution, or leaving it as it is, cause reducing the number of players'd hurt a lot of people who are not willing to sit for a half hour clicking the server on the server list waiting to get in.

I agree with you Swift, many people have good enough connections because it is not expensive anymore, but you also have to consider that enough players still lag because they slow down their internet connection or the whole thing with some trash because of no real knowledge about it or a half assed provider, thats the point where Fellow Hoodlum is absolutely right about improving you own connections first,
and besides as i stated earlier, leave the server as it is.
Well fine and ok, agreed on the point, but still does not account for the the thing when both myself and another player fighting me tell the other one they're lagging bad, although they both have under 100 ping, and 0% lag and loss.
Perhaps it is a few isolated cases, I do not know, but still I believe that it's not.

manny ppl are just @$$holes and download with marked highest priority for downloading during gameplay...
If you see laging dude and everybody around including you arent there are 3 options
1. he is Australian
2. he is downloading dumbass
3. he is Ethiopian playing from middle of desert on prehystorical PC given from Unicef with wifi antene mouted on camel during sandstorm.
Kambei. I dislike what you just said for two reasons...
A. That is somehow slightly offensive... Can't quite put my finger on why or how.
B. You're wrong. Hell... I know I've lagged like a crazy man, living in the UK, with a good connection and a good PC, fo no apparent reason. So I suggest you modify your post to make it resemble the truth.

Joe next time use search till you start criticize someone.
2. my second point is self tested true... I am playing from Czech republic.. it is country where is our disco server housed and my normal ping is around 6 with 0 loss. I have 10 mega conection (god bless college network), central server for my "campus" is far only 4 rooms from my own room but when I bring on my download accelerator and mark "high priority" wow heh I am laging as hell.
