Kambei... You have -completely- misunderstood me.

You gave three reasons that someone might lag when other people are not lagging.

1. People in australia... Yes, they will have high ping.

2. People downloading. Yes.... Some people download while playing and it causes them lag, however I don't. I still lag at times.

3. People in central africa playing on satalite. This is the bit which I found somehow a little nasty. Again I can't put my finger on why... But all the same I found your tone to be distasteful.

In terms of reasons people lag... You're wrong. there are a lot more reasons than you outlined for people to lag. For instance, explain why earlier today I randomly had a ping of over 300 (usual is 65ms) and 15% loss, while living in the UK and no-one else doing anything on the network...

How about a few people up in scotland who the other day all simultaniously lagged out while I watched, while everyone else was fine..

Actualy look before making pronouncements. Don't comment on what you don't necessarilly understand. The internet is unpredictable, as it has so many users, so many variables. And finally don't do anything in the tone you just used.

That said I can understand that you'd be confused by me labeling my points 1. 2. etc.
I have altered them just for you. Care to go back and read?

On a more relevant note to the start of the thread. I see no problems with the server as it is in terms of numbers. Just save your large scale or planned fights for off peak moments.

Joe you missunderstand me too. My 2 points are totaly true and most common on this server. Mathematicaly most of laggers are Australians (no ofense guys, you dont need good ping for RP, just dont attack me) and downloaders (slap yourself jerks). Ethiopian was just sarcasm... there isnt internet conection in Ethiopia in desert... only in biggest towns:)

"national" lags are caused by satelit issues or just with distance.

For example you Joe as british player. You are playing lalala and pew satelite wasnt responding for few seconds because that poor machine was overloaded... thats all, nothing mysterious on that, problem caused by provider.

Australians.. well they are victims of geography. When australian player press F3 for cruise engine that information is going thru server of their provider, than its going thru satelite 1... we all know from elemental physic it isnt posible to send signal through earth so their signal is transfered into next satelite and from that to next one... last third satelite send information to server of provider of our server and he send that information to our beloved server... crapy ha:) Again nothing mysterious.

Ok now we know the entire evil is hiden in servers of our providers and satelites...

Sometimes can happen something to your network card (for example my room mate have broken network card... when he share something on network and someone try to download it, his internet conection fail).

Sometimes just lag our disco server.

Now my favorite part... example:

Player Bob meet players Fish, player Chips and player Kangaroo.

Fish and Chips are british players and both have same provider, kangaroo is from australia.

Fish and Kangaroo lag like hell but chips is fine... hows that?

Well Kangaroo as ausie cant do anything with that... let poor creature be but Fish is frikin jerk because if Chips doesnt lag, Fish must be downloading and I say stone him!

You guys from Australia just have less glass fiber connections with Europe and America, so basically your connection is screwed by that:P
look (A lot goes past the Netherlands you know:P)

Is that so?

In the very first thread (linked in first post here) where MajkP asked if we should up the number of slots, the majority of players said "yes as long as it's stable/without lag".

Now it seems that while most agree that it's not without server-caused lag at times, they are still fine with it. So opinions change.

I'm not talking about fights with 10+ players, my "lag examples" were fights between max 4 people.

Ok another guestions:

[color=#FF0000]Should there be some auto-kick based on ping/lag?

If so what value should it be set on?

I don't think that a value of 600ms ping and over 60% lag would really "hurt roleplay". As if you have so much lag or so high ping just writing in system chat can take like 3 seconds before the message comes up. No to mention any kind of interaction.

[color=#33cc00]YES
<span style="font-size:10pt;line-height:100%][color=#000000]Value should be 500 imo... but there must be some kind of time counter counting your time with higher ping than limit (2 minutes?). You can have high ping for a while (antivire update f.e.) without noticed of that (if you arent in fight when is your high ping visible from first moment).

Auto Kick Based On Ping is a good idea. Many servers on various other games use it and proves useful. Just gotta make sure it is still reasonable.
600ms sounds like a good round number to use.

If the autokick starts at 500ms ping, then players like myself won't be able to play at all. I used to get around 400 ping a year or so ago. When I updated my internet to a faster australian connection and I now get over 500ms.

I can't switch my provider, so what am I supposed to do?

Simple. Don't base the kick on ping, but on Lag %.

Let's say... 25% or more lag= kick.

Sounds reasonable? Even Aussies get 500ms pings, but relatively low (or none) lag %age.

At some point, Yes. There should be some exess of lag kick or some sort.
For High Ping.
But, Yet at another rate. I don't have the greatist ping ever either.
I run from 125 - 200. So, I cannot complain and I'm from the US. Running on a 5 MB Connection.
With a Decent Computer. So, I cannot complain.
But, Yet a High Ping Kick should be good but yet then bad for those who dont have the greatest ping yet a good connection and pc. Why tourture those who join discovery for their place of life? Disco is one of the last "Decent" Gaming Communityes for FL. You take this and put a high ping cap, and some will be gone.

My Thought, Is no.
High Ping Kick :nono:

About the lag kick - a simple mission can send the ping command crazy for me. Ever tried the top-level missions in Omicron Delta against corsairs? You vs like 10+ Titans - which would be fine, without lag - and the ping command doesn't even respond.

No missions for aussie players? Or just those living in Darwin... Or maybe just me. Stupid ISP.
