Point of interest, Admins=/=Dev, and Admins aren't the ones changing these things. Except for Cannon. Who is both an admin and a dev. But the point stands.
From a "Zoner's" standpoint, Canaria sufferred a near breakdown due to the influx of miners. Utilites and public services stretched to the limit. There were grumblings of a Canarian surtax to compensate for those costs.
Zoners were the "hosts", yet were sometimes placed in untenable situations by "Guild" restrictions; caught in the middle between miners of all shapes, sizes and colors, and the impulsive pirates who chose to break from Omega 49's tradition of studied neutrality.
Things seem to be returning to normal down in sunburn central. For the most part, I think we Zoners handled the boom with reasonably good taste. Devilcat's excellent on-scene assessment gave a real feel for the "Rush of 49".
I feel your pain that the motherlode has been played out, but there's still plenty of niobium to last ya for centuries, guys. And now that the niobium boom is over, Canaria can evolve to effete, snobby art town, and begin to promote their dung sculpture with renewed vigor.
I don't hate miners. I think their squishy insides go best with a side dish of terrified slave. Tastes a bit like chicken.
I've also heard some miners say that the O49 field is still profitable if you have exactly the right equipment, ship, ID and IFF. If you don't then it isn't profitable.
Sure, trading earns more money but in general the risk of running these trade routes is much higher. The risk in O49 is close to zero for most mining ships. The primary reason for nerfing it was: zero risk and high profit is unbalanced and must be fixed. This is a mod bug.
Remember that although the strike in O49 has played out, the field is still profitable and there will be other strikes.
If you want to increase the target mining yields because some other money making system (trading, missions, whatever) makes a lot more per hour then you need to send me a PM with the details. I'll collate this information and make a reasoned argument with evidence to the other devs that it should be increased. Only one person has done this so far.
EDIT: Xoria is also an admin/dev.
EDIT2: Thinking about it, Igiss is too.
EDIT3: and Kuraine and Korrd made FAM that almost everybody uses; i've probably missed someone else...

Seriously people, Discovery is an MMORPG, much like Guild Wars, EVE, and WoW. If you want to be rich and wealthy, that takes time and patience. Either be happy poor or work hard to be rich.

I'm going to have to agree with just about every reply in this thread. Now, I've never been mining in O49, but I've flown freight for ops that mined the hell out of Silverton, Copperton(pre-nerf), and Uhh... the Helium field in Penny(forgot the name) and I've had nothing but great experiences in each location raking in millions of credits with outstanding RP from large groups of freighters, miners, escorts, pirates, police... Ehh, you get the idea.
Psst, can't wait for some more locations to scout and mine. We're getting good at it.
Well, he wasn't really that humble.. could be a real pain in the butt at times, but he was a friend.
Ant, aka Alan Kell, his droid XM, Spike and Kate Harris, and ol' Scutter, built his Canarian estate, an A-Train, an OC Dessie, and the (now) TAZ flagship from mining that field. I don't know how long it took, but i'll venture it was months or years, rather than weeks, roleplaying every inch of the way.
Im not mad it was lowerd, as much as I made i knew it would happen.
WHat DOES annoy me is the whole 'mining should earn less than trading' commentary made in the other thread.
All that will do is make people mine LESS.
yes, I know you can mine a lot in 49 still with the propper kit (not saying what on purpose, folks need to read the info thats easily avalible on the forums on it) and come out coverd in creds, however mining DOES require more work, therefore SHOULDNT earn LESS than trading.
HOWEVER, an idea .... make the better fields (read: more dangerous border world fields like 49) yield the most of any mining spot, BUT randomly use the auto-updater to make a 'new' place for a resource rush, and dont announce it.
If people find it, they find it, if they dont they dont. (note: have it be a mining zone within a mining zone so its harder to discover).
Also, prehaps, while doing that also have (for pairity) similar resource rushes for trading too.
Me Wrote:Effort doesn't relate to amount earned ... player interaction is what counts
More effort doesn't mean you earn more money. Missions earn nothing compared to trading and mining, and I say the high level ones take more effort than both activities combined.
The idea of a secret resource rush would work for maybe a day - news of really profitable routes/mining spots spreads like wildfire. The synth paste bug in Omicron Delta was abused by tons of people who didn't "discover" it, they heard about it from other players / looked it up on FLstat or FLcompanion. A mild increase in profits in a random field would be good though - similar to the trading event scheme set up by Xoria.
